So I don’t really use Tumblr to blog/journal or post personal pics too often, but I’ve been on a kick with meal kits and cooking lately, and I wanted to show off some of what I’ve made!
I’ve never really cooked that much for myself, so I’m really proud of what I made here even if it’s all simple stuff!
Anybody want a free Every Plate box? I have 4 codes
A box is three meals
Hi gang; I have two coupon codes for meal kits you guys if you want to use them, which I hope you do because I would like to get fed lolll and also I’m assuming some of you guys might want to try out meal kits without paying the super high price for them.
$40 off your first HelloFresh box
$20 off your first EveryPlate box
I get $20 credit for either link as long as people actually buy the boxes/get it shipped lol and ya girl wants to save time and have food instead of driving to go grocery shopping during boards so hopefully people want these boxes lmao??? And I’m not sure if this is US only; if someone has an issue with it outside the US lmk so I can update the post!
Also if you’re like me and was really not sure how meal kit prices are/the pros and cons of either I wrote a little bit on both to help in the read more. :)
Not the best presentation but I give you : black bean tacos from Every Plate
They are super delicious

meal kit mAdNe$$ episode 1
Ok so we all agree that delivery meal kits are hideously overpriced and terrible for the environment. However, if you cancel after the Cheap Week they give you for signing up, it's almost not a huge waste of money and can be a good assist if you're extra busy/indecisive/uninspired/transportation challenged.
Every Plate was the first thing I got when I googled "meal kit delivery" and honestly I don't think there's a huge difference between all these companies so I signed up. I got 3 meals, 2 portions each, for $28.93 which included shipping. That is only the introductory first week price, and it works out to $9.64/meal, $4.82 per portion. I didn't meal plan, drive to the store, choose ingredients, buy them and bring them home. But I did still cook and wash dishes.
It's been years since I counted calories, but to me 740 calories per serving is a little high, and it's the lowest out of the three meals I was sent. When you're done cooking, it's obvious why- it's mostly meat and noodles, with a very low veggie ratio. I get it, fresh veggies are the most expensive thing for meal kit companies to keep on hand, but even still, the ones included in this meal (cabbage and carrots) are some of the least expensive and longest lasting vegetables available. They could just... give you more.
If I were going to be a long-term user of meal kits, I would probably look over each recipe and see where I could squeeze in some extra veggies- this 2-portion meal could have easily become a 3-portion meal by adding a bell pepper and a small bag of snow peas, or even just 3x as much coleslaw mix. And then it would also come in at around 550 calories/serving instead of 740.
I cooked professionally for a decade, but these days find absolutely no joy in cooking for myself. I tried a meal kit service because I'm sick of all the things I usually make and needed a little hand holding when it came to trying something new. I feel like I got what I came for here: this recipe included several ingredients I don't usually buy, and now I feel like I could easily recreate it on my own.
In summary: this recipe tasted great! (a little salty) I'd say the value is so-so and the nutrition is not all that, but tweakable with some planning.
I did not get paid for these words, all meal kit services offer introductory discounts that are available to first-time customers. I have already cancelled Every Plate after collecting my 3 discounted meals and will likely move on to another service in a couple of weeks.
Long Story About Autism and Expensive Food
A few months back we switched from Every Plate to Cook Unity.
Every Plate was great during covid when we had a lot of time to spend at home and could spend that time preparing the dishes. However now we are both working full-time and by the time we're home at night most nights it is just too much work to go through all of those recipes which usually entails making three things simultaneously- two vegetables and one meat.
Cook Unity is not cheap but it is already prepared, you can choose from hundreds of meals from almost any type of cuisine in the world and it is prepared for you by a chef.
The menu for my every plate subscription for next week.
I absolutely love it, but the energy it takes to make it after a day at work....
It's all fresh and I have let the vegetables spoil so often I've taught myself other recipes for the meat.
