Is Archfey warlock fun? I wanted to try it, but people don’t seem to rate it.
I love it! I chose it mostly for character story. I liked the idea of having a chaotic good patron since honestly FFXIV Wolf had a much more tragic backstory - I thought it was a nice change. I didn't look up class guides and just built with what sounded good. I can talk my way out of literally anything (same of all charisma classes like bard and paladin). The narrator lines for fey patron are really amusing. Obviously the way you build something out will greatly affect if a class is fun, but I've managed to make him well balanced for most situations so I'm enjoying it.
I went with pact of the blade, so I can use longswords and charisma instead of strength for attacks. I can attack twice with my pact weapon. I use a shield and found some gloves that make my spells work equally well in melee range. I found a helm that buffs intellect so I talked to Withers and put those points in dexterity and constitution for sturdiness instead. If there is a high ground I get up there and use spells for advantage. If it's flat ground I can hang out with Karlach in melee.
Fey Presence and Misty Escape are great! I'm not high enough level for Beguiling Defense yet but charm immunity sounds good. I got the eldritch traits that buff the Eldritch Blast cantrip. So that + Armor of Agathys are really all I need. Occasionally Hunger of Hadar for crowd control. I only have 2 spell slots right now but they reset on short rest.
Bottom line is I chose it for the RP but it's been well balanced in combat. I can take plenty of hits and do consistent damage. So I think it's fun.
ps. I found rings that let him cast Warding Bond on Gale. Gale is usually the focus of the enemies but hardly ever takes any damage because I have gloves that boost dexterity (which Mage Armor uses to up AC) so Wolf being able to give him resistance to all damage and bonus to saving throws made him a ranged tank with the evocation wizard benefit of no "friendly fire". The rare occasion he gets hit the damage done to Wolf hasn't been an issue.
