The hurricane itself hadn't been too awful for the Keels household, but it was the aftermath of it all that had gotten to Sammy. When the power flickered back on, the news was showing story after story of people who hadn’t been so lucky. He was already getting the itch to pull on his raincoat and take the car down towards the docks to see if anyone needed help when he’d gotten the call to come into work for the disaster relief.
So, 48 hours, one power nap on the floor of the makeshift clinic they’d set up outside an overflowing hospital, and about six of those little donated cans of Spaghetti-O’s cracked open like soda cans later, he'd finally been shuffled out of there by one of his coworkers with strict instructions to go home and rest up.Â
He did not do that. The disaster had him wired, and he wasn’t going to sleep easy without at least checking in on a few more people.
In the puzzle that made up his life, Everett was a line of edge pieces, stuck together right out of the box. Something that put other pieces into perspective, that made the big picture just a bit clearer. When he’d learned about the supernatural being real, he’d kept that a secret for all of 2 days before he broke down and told him. Excitedly presenting proof of the supernatural to a guy who immediately admitted to being raised in a witch coven and knowing about these things his whole life was a bit embarrassing, sure, but that was pretty quickly overshadowed by the relief of having someone to talk about this with. Everett was one of the few friendships that had actually lasted outside of school functions and the only one to last past graduation, he was worth a lot more than a couple seconds of feeling like he’d been an unobservant jerk.
Right now, he was worth a couple breakfast sandwiches from the weirdly still open Waffle House, and a trek through a slightly flooded parking lot up to his apartment to make sure he was okay. Two at a time up the stairs, and soon enough, he was rapping on the door with his knuckles. "Ev, it's Sammy, open up! I brought food."
