I am better now..
Eve had waited to reach out to Colt. She knew it wasn’t going to be easy and she didn’t want to be on his bad side however the wasn’t going to give up.
She wasn’t surprised see him there already, fifteen minute early. She had no doubts that his security detail had already done a sweep of the place and informed him of her arrival.
As she walked into the empty restaurant and heard the door click locked behind her, her heart raced. His face was not kind, was not soft, and truthfully she could not blame him. She had done the unthinkable. Not only had she left him without word - breaking off their engagement - she took his child. There was nothing else more precious to Colt than his children. Anyone who knew him, knew that much. She hadn’t been in her right mind but no amount of apologies was going to fix it.
He stood and gave her a curt nod. “Eve.” He motioned for the chair across from him as he sat. Her heart ached just a little for the man who could easily sweep her into his arms and Carry her off to their room. For the strong hands that guided her , that roamed her body freely once.
He was waiting for her to speak and for a moment she forgot all that she wanted to say. As she cleared her throat though, she worked to find her words. “Colt.. I know that I can’t apologize enough for what I did but I want to try anyways. I was not in the right state of mind.. I hurt you.. I hurt Colbie.” His jaw tensed at her mention of their daughters name, ever the protective father. “I know that if I reach out to her.. if you don’t approve.. she will shut me out..please..”
His face hadn’t softened, perhaps it had even gotten harder. “My first job is to protect my children. How can I be sure that you won’t hurt her?” It was a question that left little room for ifs or maybes or anything of the sort. He needed concrete answers, assurances, but all she had was her word and to him that had become worthless. Her eyes watered a bit “I can only give you my word..” he snorted “which, I know means little to nothing to you.. but I want to know her Colt.. I am better now and I will not hurt her again.”
He studied her for a few moments. The ticking of the clock seemed to roar in her ears. Finally he spoke. “Do you know it took me nearly five years to find her? That she was in the foster system. Do you know that she was very nearly adopted? Or do you know that she slept in my bed until she was thirteen because she was so scared to be alone, so afraid that I was going to leave her. Or do you know shit like that still happens to her? She’s terrified of being left. She struggles regularly with attachment issues but now won’t even talk to me about them? *mYou did that to her.”
The tears were streaming down her cheeks now “I know.. I know that I fucked up but I’m here trying to make up for it.. help any way that I can.. you can talk to her siblings.. I’ve been accountable for them, for a few years now. Not once have I missed a date with them, nor a call, anything.”
He eyed her still harshly. No part of him wanted to agree with this but she was right, if Colbie sensed that he didn’t approve, she would give up and he knew she was curious about her mother and he’d only be hurting Colbie.
“Fine.” He said through gritted teeth “but so help me Eve. If you hurt her I will destroy your life.”
She swallowed and nodded because it was all she could do. He wasn’t joking and she wasn’t taking it lightly.she knew very well that he was very serious.
