Evan grew up in Merrock as the only child of Lily and Joe Parker, living in a small house close to the sea. As a kid, Evan loved spending most of the day outside, chasing after seagulls until he was so tired that he only sat there, staring at the waves of the ocean. Even though money was a little tight most of the time, they were a happy family. At least for a little while.
It all changed when Evan was five years old and his mother was diagnosed with cancer. There wasn’t much that the doctors could do for her anymore and when she passed about half a year later, everything had changed. Being too young to fully grasp what had happened and why his mother wasn’t there anymore, Evan clung to his father even more, not wanting to lose him as well. It was a pretty hard time for both of them but his father tried the best he could and even though they both still missed the woman they’d lost, it eventually became easier with time.
Growing up, Evan tried to support his father as much as he could, whether it was cleaning the house or cooking something to eat. Of course there were times when the two of them argued but it was never for long. So when Evan finally came out to his father, he was a little surprised at first but supported him right from the start. And although most of his closest friends felt the same way, it still wasn’t easy at school. During the first weeks, he lay in bed, unable to fall asleep as his brain replayed every cruel joke he’d heard from some idiot at school over and over again. It took Evan quite some time to learn not listen to them anymore and start paying attention to all those other people, who didn’t care whether he was into boys or girls.
During his last year at high school, Evan started working at the Cobblestone Cafe to earn some more money and when they offered him a full time job after finishing school, he immediately accepted. He had always liked the place and he’d never been someone who needed much money either. Besides he knew that he could never leave Merrock and his father behind just like that. They only had each other after all. But since he still needed some place just for himself, Evan saved enough money to move into his own small apartment downtown a few years ago. And even though he doesn’t get to spend as much time with his father as before, the two of them are still pretty close.
