In George's dreams, white whales in the clouds peacefully drift across the most azure sky ever — azure was Alex's favorite color.

He hasn't seen clear sky, unlit by the flashes of gunfire and unclouded by the smoke of explosions, in several years.

In these dreams, Alex is always beside him, smiling his cat-like smile, draping an arm over his shoulders, and George melts at the fact that his senior comrade, a real Eva pilot, has taken notice of him.

Little remained of Alex after that mission. A few bone fragments that hadn't perished in the fire — and even then, it was unclear whether they were his or Pierre's, who had been holding his hand in that terrible second.

George wished he could be the one holding Alex's hand now.
