This is Eustace Chapuys, our daughter's Syrian hamster. We brought this cuddle kiwi home in February, a few days before our daughter turned 2. I thought she needed a cuddly pet of some kind because she was incredibly interested in our son's first two rats, Togedemaru and Pikachu. Originally, we were told Eustace was male, so we decided to name him after Katherine of Aragon's most dedicated supporter, the Spanish Ambassador at the Tudor Court. We have since learned that this hamster is actually female, so we call her Chappy (although we called her that when we thought it was a male, too). She is a rather excitable hamster, and of all pet rodents, I'm convinced this one might be the most fearsome if you wake her up. She usually sleeps on her side like this or wholly on her back, all four paws in the air. She likes our daughter better than anyone else, and our daughter doesn't flinch - beyond a scowl - if Chappy nips at her (she's drawn blood once, when we first brought her home). Our daughter will simply point one finger at the hamster and say, "You don't bite me" in an even, commanding tone. Chappy likes yogurt drops and sunflower seeds, and she has a habit of stuffing so much food in her cheeks that she can't fit in the tubes in her cage. Around 9:30 PM every night, she'll stand in the corner of her cage and fold her hands, staring at @the_envirominimalist_dad until he feeds her. What can I say?
