One of the most famous and complicated demonstrations of this phenomenon is the trolley problem. So, I'd like to think it's no big secret that I really don't like Blizzard Entertainment. They have done a lot of things that I do not agree with, and have stepped on toes specifically to step on toes. On the other hand Overwatch looks really fun, and as someone who liked the cartoony style of TF2, this is definitely my shtick. On the other other hand, Blizzard Entertainment has shown price discrimination against console users, and while I'm a PC gamer, this is still something I can't stand for. So, like, how do I resolve this? Wait for it to be a Free To Play model, like League of Legends, or a Free to Play model like TF2, or just ignore it?
An evil scientist engineers a creature. She is not human, not animal, she is simply an abomination. She is intelligent in the way that an animal is intelligent, but much like a human, she is aware. She is conscious, alive, and aware of her own existence as a living thing. Her nervous system is complex enough to feel physical pain, but it is unknown if her mind is complex enough to feel emotional pain. However, her creator imbued her with the dangerous and violent instincts of a skilled predator.
The scientist is arrested for “crimes against nature,” but there still remains the issue of the creature. What to do with her? Kill her, contain her, something else entirely?
So my aunt was taking this required ethics class and was presented with this ethical condundrum:
The Sheriff of Nottingham captured Little John and Robin Hood and imprisoned them in his maximum-security dungeon. Maid Marion begged the Sheriff for their release, pleading her love for Robin. The Sheriff agreed to release them only if Maid Marion spent the night with him.To this she agreed. The next morning the Sheriff released his prisoners. Robin at once demanded that Marion tell him how she persuaded the Sheriff to let them go free. Marion confessed the truth, and was bewildered when Robin abused her, calling her a slut, and saying that he never wanted to see her again. At this Little John defended her, inviting her to leave Sherwood with him and promising life-long devotion. She accepted and they rode away together.
Then she as supposed to rank them according to morality and defend her choice to the class.
I backlashed and immediately became defensive of Maid Marion, but at the time couldn't come up with a good explanation of why I felt that way. It just occurred now to me that she was the only one that acted purely in the best interests of others, and whether that makes her more or less moral than anyone I don't know, but she deserves to be defended.
(Of course, it hurt Robin Hood that Maid Marion would cheat on him, but by her reaction it's clear that she thought he would value being free more than he would value her affections. Are her actions more moral because she doesn't value herself? Is it the patriarchy's fault for teaching her this? Or does she not see exchanging sex as a big deal-- it doesn't in fact affect her self worth-- because she got want she wanted too? I don't argue that Robin Hood not wanting to be with her and being hurt was immoral, just that he didn't actively take any *moral* action.)
(You could definitely argue that Little John acts in Maid Marion's best interest too, but I don't see him as someone who gets a lot of female attention, so it depends a lot on how he treats Maid Marion and what she actually wants. Does Maid Marion enjoy his affections or does she feel like she doesn't have a better choice? Would she be scarlet lettered and outcast if Little John didn't want a girl so bad? Is Little John a Nice Guy or is this a genuinely noble gesture? When they leave Sherwood, what if Maid Marion finds someone she's more attracted to? Does Little John constantly remind her of what he did for her, to make her feel guilty and stay with him? Would it be immoral if Maid Marion used him to get out of Sherwood, then dumped his ass when she no longer needed his defense?)
