Il termine 𝗘𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗮 fu coniato dal filosofo Michel Foucault per indicare quegli spazi connessi a tutti gli altri spazi, ma in modo tale da sospendere, neutralizzare o invertire l'insieme dei rapporti che essi stessi designano, riflettono o rispecchiano: luoghi reali, sorta di utopie realizzate in spazi definiti, radicalmente differenti da tutti gli altri luoghi.
Nei luoghi eterotopici tutti i luoghi reali di una civiltà vengono rappresentati, contestati e rovesciati.
Le 𝘶𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘦 consolano: se non hanno luogo reale, aprono ad uno spazio meraviglioso e sereno; ti portano in luoghi dai vasti viali e dai giardini ben curati.
Le eterotopie e eterocronie sono solidali tra loro, poiché nelle eterocronie uno spazio viene occupato stabilmente e capitalizzato per preservare una memoria (biblioteca, museo), mentre altri spazi anche prossimi possono essere occupati solo temporaneamente in vista di eventi.
