A woman who was out waking her dog has been crushed to death after a generator fell off the back of a flatbed lorry.

The unnamed 40-year-old suffered severe head injuries during the accident that took place near Etchingham railway station in East Sussex just before 7am yesterday morning.

A 44-year-old man also suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where he is said to be in a stable condition.

Another man was forced to jump over a church wall to escape injury.

Passing commuters performed CPR and first aid on the injured pair until paramedics and an air ambulances doctors arrived.

The generator came loose from the rear of the Ford Transit Flat Bed lorry near a level crossing in the village.

The woman and man were residents in the local area.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Emergency services were called to a report of a generator having fallen off a Ford transit flatbed lorry and hitting two pedestrians in Etchingham High Street near the railway station level crossing just before 6.55am today.

"A 40-year-old woman sadly died at the scene.

"A man aged 44 also suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

"He is in a stable condition."

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman added: "I can confirm that we were called shortly before 7am this morning to Station Approach in Etchingham to reports a generator had fallen from a vehicle injuring two people.

"Ambulance crews in three ambulances and four cars attended the scene along with the air ambulance.

"Sadly, despite best efforts, a woman died at the scene.

"A man was treated before being airlifted with serious injuries to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.”

The 42-year-old driver of the lorry, from Ashford, Kent, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody.
