[Let me say this first: I believe Essek is genuine in believing the empire is giving back the original beacon, and genuine in believing that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it... he can be sincere and also wrong.]

THOUGHTS:

* the assembly has broken/trapped the original beacon they experimented on/drained with Yeza’s help, and intend to return that beacon to the dynasty... they showed the new found one to the M9 so they wouldn’t know the original was broken, and intend to switch it? The new beacon has empire handles and the BQ would recognise it as not the originally stolen one... they wouldn’t be dumb enough to try to pass it off, surely.

* so why did they show the M9 the new one? What did that have to gain from that - if they intend to give back one that looks recognisably different?

* Nott tried to get a fragment of possibility... but Trent prevented her from completing it (beau questioned him about the tripod - he noticed nott looking into it, and recognised what she was doing, and bent the tripod around in a way that subsequently broke notts concentration... did he intentionally let her get that far to confirm it was “ok” but had to stop it before something was triggered?)

* all the research the assembly has put into the beacon... could they duplicate it? DID THEY MAKE THE “FOUND” BEACON?!” Why would they bother? They’re absolutely up to something.

* what if it IS trapped. It’s a bunch of super powerful mages working together - Trent and Vess for sure, apparently Ludinus too (according to Oremid?) they’ve made it resemble it enough, and work in a similar way, but if it’s just a normal beacon then why not let nott finish her minute?
