Ugh I'm so glad that you see the saddest part of XiYao! A-Yao really cannot be himself around Xichen and that has to be exhausting - yet another drain to pour his energy down. We (fandom, shippers) often acknowledge the parts of XiYao that are tragic for Xichen but I've never seen anyone do that for A-Yao. The tragedy for him is... Moulding yourself into the image someone else wants (even needs) to see until you no longer recognize yourself.
That's honestly why I personally prefer ChengYao and RuoCheng - because they can accept the parts of him he wants validation for the most.
OMG this! I love xiyao to bits, and if I had to choose someone for A-Yao based on canon alone, that'd be Xichen. But that doesn't mean it's perfect.
You are right, I've seen much more on how the xiyao's divorce was so terrible for Xichen, but since A-Yao is the "bad guy", we rarely see how the relationship was less than ideal on his end too.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe that A-Yao adored Xichen: he was the only person A-Yao was never willing to sacrifice, the man to show him kindness regardless of circumstances and stand up for him even to his other dear ones. But the person Xichen protected and cherished all those years was not fully A-Yao, was it?
As I see it, Xichen constantly giving him the benefit of the doubt and believing A-Yao had good reasons to do what he did is a sign of trust, yes, but also chance after chance for him to prove those negative aspects of A-Yao weren't truly there. And while I can totally see that as a way for Xichen to encourage A-Yao to be a better person, it fails to acknowledge why even A-Yao has those feelings and does those things in the first place.
To keep Xichen's favor, A-Yao had to present to him that image of a good yet misunderstood man that only ever did something questionable bc there was no other choice, that it was for the greater good. Not bc he had been harboring resentment and had been traumatized to attack before someone hurts him, and who lives in a constant state of paranoia bc he is never truly safe or respected.
And damn, that must have been exhausting.
Then Guanyin Temple happened, and even Xichen turned on him. Bc at the end of the day, Xichen is a good man, and A-Yao denounced the possibility of being one too if he wanted to live safe and free from the eternal judgement of a society that hated him just for who he was born to.
In the end, Xichen had been willing to die with him, but for A-Yao there was no turning back from Xichen seeing his real self and obviously not liking it.
DUDE CHENGYAO. That's another ship I think would allow A-Yao much more freedom to show himself more completely. Bc if there is someone to understand the thirst for revenge and the need to prove himself, that's one Jiang Wanyin.
JC has his own ppl first and foremost and there's no price too high or line not worth crossing for them, so he would be much more receptive to A-Yao's actions, even sympathize with them to some extent.
I just think a lot of mutual understanding could come from them.

The following story isn’t exactly NSFW - there’s no sex, no disrobing, etc - but it is an MC story edging towards smut, so read at your own risk. It was inspired by watching @soundshypnotic and @arihi Sunday night at Charmed, but it is not even remotely based on that scene.
“Excuse me, but I was told that you could help me get something I’m looking for?” I timidly asked the striking figure before me, not quite believing my daring to ask, not sure what answer I was hoping for. They were almost otherworldly, black hair framing a nearly marble-white face, falling impossibly far down their back.
“I very well may, for the right price. What is this thing worth to you?” They seemed … distantly curious, unengaged but willing to hear me out. Hoping that was a good sign, I took a deep breath and continued my plea.
“I’m not sure; I haven’t much to give. If it’s money you want, I can offer a little - “
“I don’t deal in money, pet. I deal in hearts and minds and souls. If, perchance, you want your heart’s desire, I’ll need a part of your mind or soul. If it’s a treasure of the mind you request, I will accept a treasure of the heart or soul in its place.”
I blinked. “And how do you do that? Like, is it some sort of equivalent exchange? How is that even possible?”
“I can answer those questions, if you agree to the terms I mentioned.”
They smiled at me, a smile that made me feel like I was missing … something … that mattered as they held their hand out for me to shake. The smile didn’t reach their dark, almost endless eyes. But I’d come this far, and their terms seemed too unreal to let them scare me off.
“I agree,” I said, shaking their hand.
The smile they graced me with was somewhere between the toothy display a wolf gives another to back them off and the beauty of an angel painted in an old European cathedral. I took half a step backwards in surprise before they gave me an answer. “I am a being with power you could never imagine, pet. For what I give, I do take an equivalent thing in exchange. You might call it magic.”
As they finished their answer, I felt a little jolt, like a static shock, jump from my palm to theirs where our hands were still clasped together. I blinked, wondering why I’d thought their smile was predatory before. “So, who chooses what I give in exchange?”
“Oh, me, of course, pet. I’m offering the service, so I get to set the price.” They gently ran a hand over my hair, another tingle tracing the path of the petting.
That made sense, of course they would! “That seems fair! Is there something I should call you?”
“I have no proper name, but you may call me Fica, if you need a name for me.” They gently ran their hand down my arm, and the tingle was less electric this time, and more like the energy of a lover’s touch. “But my pet, you still haven’t told me what it is you came to ask for.”
“I got distracted! But yes, I did come to ask for something. I’m just trying to weigh its worth against your price.” I tried to focus on why I’d come, but my fingers itched to touch their hair, to pull them against me for a kiss. I wasn’t sure where that thought came from, or why their eyes seemed as entrancing as the darkest night sky, but I couldn’t get it out of my head.
“It’s probably for the best that you weigh the costs carefully. I would hate for you to be unsatisfied with our bargin, pet.” They grinned at me again, their dark eyes dancing as I thought things through. “If you still have questions, I am happy to answer them.”
I considered what I knew. “I haven’t noticed any particular changes, and I’m assuming the tingle I’ve felt as you’ve answered my questions has been the exchange happening. Am I not noticing the change because the changes have been subtle, or is there something else preventing me from noticing? If so, what?”
Fica grinned even wider. “Ooh, you are a clever one! Your assumption is correct, pet, that’s exactly what that tingle is. I don’t have to touch you for it to happen, of course, but I rather enjoy the contact. But no, you won’t notice the changes; after all, I do like those who come to me to end our interaction happier than they were, and if you were aware of what you lost, you might always mourn that you no longer had it and were unable to reclaim it.”
I was expecting the tingle this time, but it was so much stronger than the previous one that I gasped a little, the electricity of it making my knees a little wobbly. “Why was that one so much stronger?”
“You asked a more important question, and got a more important answer, so I got an equally important part of you in exchange.”
This time, the shock did take me to my knees, but I was ok with that. It just felt proper to kneel before the magnificent creature in front of me. I gazed up at them, my hand reaching up to them almost before I realized it.
“Aw, did you want something, pet?” they asked with a deep chuckle, reaching down to stroke my cheek.
“I … “ the words wouldn’t fit together in my head. Every time I tried to figure out what I wanted, I just realized how proper it felt to be at their feet like this.
“If you want to be mine, pet, you have to say it. I can’t do anything if you don’t say out loud what you want.” The words had an almost palpable weight, like I shouldn’t do what they were asking, like there was something I still didn’t understand, but when they said that so sweetly, with their hands gently stroking my cheeks that way, how could I ever do anything else?
“Please, Fica, make me yours?”
“Of course, pet, thank you so much for asking!” They bent down and kissed me, and the shock exploded in my brain, scattering my thoughts until only one remained. I was theirs.
