[New Song Of The Week] Barns Courtney - Hands
Song number 250! Yeah, we’ve been writing these pieces for 250 weeks straight on. That’s almost 5 years(!) of our lives spent on Tumblr. And we love it out here.
Why we do it? Good question. For you of course. We’d love to introduce those cool artists to you before you heard them anywhere else. The artist you hear for the first time on the radio, announced by the DJ as that one insider tip you really gotta hear right now. That’s the song we’re looking for. The artists you see on the smallest stages on their first tour abroad, but who conquer the main stage two years later, like we saw with Courtney Barnett for example. To find those artists at the right moment. That’s our mission.
Now let’s put up front that Barns Courtney ain’t no Courtney Barnett, at least not on the musical spectrum, but he sure has some tricks up his sleeve. Listen to ear-worm Glitter & Gold for example. His unique selling points are a rambling, stomping guitar sound, his dark voice and definitely the incredibly catchy sing-along parts he manages to implement in every track.Â
When we went to whoo-hoo along at Eurosonic where he was scheduled for 45 minutes, we didn’t expect it to be so busy. But due to the small capacity of the venue and some first buzz, his song Fire was just used in the movie Burnt, we could only catch him performing his last three singles with enough fury to persuade all the 300 people that the room could fit. The queue outside was so long that even after the end of the 20 minute-set there were still about 200 people trying to get in, sadly thinking Barns was still mid-set.
So please Barns Courtney, play a little longer next time, will you? Should not be a problem with the release of that new Hands EP of yours, should it? And for the ones that missed out, maybe in a bigger venue perhaps?
(Fun fact: Courtney and Barnett will be certainly meet each other this summer, if not on Latitude, then certainly in France on Festival Musilac. We honestly can’t wait to hear how that meet-up went.) Enjoy!
