ESE coffee pods, the revolution of the home espresso making
Actually there are so many factors influencing the taste of a good coffee.
First of all the device used to make it. The professional espresso machines make the hot water, ever at the perfect temperature, pass through the right quantity of grind coffee the exact time to do not burn it and preserve all the blend features.
Obviously these devices where too big and expensive to be used at home, until in the eighties a very simple and wise solution have been found. The roasters began to produce this sort of paper bag with just the right quantity of grind coffee inside. At the very beginning they were used just in coffee shop, mainly for decaffeinated espresso, to avoid to use a grinder only for decaf beans having a great quality coffee anyway.
In the early nineties producers like Nespresso, Gaggia and De' Longhi began to produce home espresso machines which work with pods. Way smaller and cheaper than the professional ones, they were perfect for who did not settle of having low quality coffee at home.
At the very beginning of their history these devices did not have a large success. The main problem was the incompatibility of the pods with different machines. Basically every device could work just with its own kind of pod.
This problem has been solved thanks to the introduction in the market of a standard pod size named ESE, acronym of Easy Serving Espresso.
44 mm of diameter X 7 g of weight. This is recognised to be the perfect combination for having a top quality espresso. 7 g is, in fact, the same amount of grind coffee used by the professional machines and 44 mm diameter allow the hot water to hit a surface of coffee powder thick enough to transfer all its flavour without burning.
Thanks to this innovation, the home espresso machines are now being so well developed to became very cheap and the choose of blends sold in pods is outstanding.
