“Please, let me in.” His voice sounded weak, separated only by the thin wood of the closed door.
Tears streamed down Y/N’s face as she pressed her back against the door, head tilted back and eyes squeezed shut. She could picture him; his voice was so close he must have his own forehead pressed against the door, unseeing eyes hazy with unshed tears. The thought did nothing to stop the flow of her own.
Her mind was a mess of emotions - angry, sadness, confusion. But rising above all of them; the sharp sting of betrayal. How could he keep this from me?
“Y/N. Please.” His voice cracked, heavy with emotion. “Please, let me explain.” She shook her head, keeping it pushed almost painfully against the door. She knew he would hear it, would sense it. Because she knew now, knew how far his abilities truly stretched. Could he hear the sound of her heart breaking? Splintering, cracking, gaping down the middle. She felt hollow, and overflowing, and everything in between.
Matt, her Matt, was someone else entirely. She didn’t know if she’d even recognise him anymore, if she could combine in her head the image of her Matt, soft and good and full of love, with the image of a night-roaming, violent vigilante. The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. She’d been so blind, so stupid. All those times he’d shown up with fresh bruises, every time he’d wince when she hugged him too tight. All brushed off as a side effect of his disability. He’s just clumsy. She would think. Prone to disaster. She supposed she wasn’t too far off there.
He was still breathing her name on the other side of the door, calling out to her in a voice so broken she almost caved, almost pulled the door open and sank into his awaiting arms. But she couldn’t shake the memory out of her head; Matt, wearing that mask, crawling through his window with blood smeared across his cheek. The way he froze when he sensed her - sensed her; she still couldn’t grasp that was something he was able to do now - sitting, waiting on his couch. The realisation that had dawned on her, that had stolen the very breath from her lungs and sent the blood pounding to her head. Leaving his apartment was a blur; a desperate haze of blurry eyes, reeling mind and fast breaths, until she had slammed the door of her own apartment in his face.
Y/N sagged down against it now, sliding down until she was curled with her knees against her chest. She heard the brush of movement against wood behind her, as Matt followed her down on the other side. He was silent now. There was no sound for a few, long moments. Only her own ragged breaths, and the ticking of the clock on the wall.
“Y/N.” His voice was shaky. “I really fucked up.” A beat. “I should have told you.”
She could only sigh unevenly.
“Please. Tell me what I can do to fix this.” She could hear the desperation in his voice.
And she wanted to. Wanted to accept his whispered apologies and start again. Wanted to go back to the way things were. She wanted late nights talking, whispers in the dark, smiles against each other’s lips. She wanted Matt’s arms around her, wanted drinks at Josie’s and laughter with his friends. She wanted the unfiltered happiness he always brought her, the easy way they moved together, perfect Sundays just the two of them in his apartment.
But they couldn’t go back. They could never go back.

Request: Can I request a Peter Pevensie imagine that takes place after Prince Caspian where the reader is his best friend and they're both pining after each other?
Y/N was late.
Dodging and weaving through the crowds of people outside the train station, she risked another look at the old watch on her wrist and silently cursed. The train was going to leave any second now, and she was going to miss it.
Muttering apologies as she shoved through the entrance to the station, she flew down the stairs, almost tripping over her own feet in her haste. Her breath puffed out of her as she turned the corner - and there was the train, and her best friend Peter Pevensie standing anxiously in the door. As he spotted her he mouthed at her to 'hurry up' and reached out his hand towards her. Just as the whistle blew, she ran straight into him and the doors shut behind her. He staggered back a few steps, laughing as she righted herself.
"God, Y/N, could you leave it any more to the last second?" She went to shove him, not able to retort as she tried to regain her breath, but realised he was still holding on to her arms. Her cheeks tinged pink, as he too realised and took a step back with a cough.
"Y/N, Peter, come sit down!" Peter's youngest sister Lucy called and Y/N smiled warmly at her. Peter may have been her best friend, but she got along well with all of the Pevensie siblings - particularly little Lucy. Taking a seat beside her, she began recounting the reason why she had almost missed the train.
"-and then the cat decided to trip me up too-" Peter, now sat beside her, laughed loudly at this.
"Y/N, I'm pretty sure you could trip over your own feet if you tried hard enough." She tried to scowl at him, but his laughter was contagious and she couldn't help but crack a smile.
"Yeah well, we can't all be Mr Perfect." Peter had always been a good-looking guy, but recently he had really come into himself - his golden hair seemed to flop into his eyes in just the right way, his clothes always fit him just right, and he held himself with almost a regal air. Realising she was staring, Y/N quickly looked away towards Edmund, who had snorted at her comment.
"Peter, perfect? He wishes." The siblings and Y/N devolved into an argument about who was the most 'perfect' out of all of them, and before they knew it they had arrived at school. As they were exiting the train, Peter grabbed onto Y/N and held her back so they were walking behind his siblings.
"Meet after school again today?" She smiled softly at him.
"Of course, Peter. Just like always." She teased him slightly, but was surprised when his cheeks turned pink and he flicked his hair in front of his face.
"Yeah, well, I just wanted to check." Y/N couldn't help the way her heart fluttered at his shyness - Peter was never shy, especially not with her. They were best friends, they knew everything about each other. So what was making him so nervous now? She patted his arm as they reached the steps where they would part.
"I'll be right here after school." With one last wave, they went their separate ways for the day. Neither of them noticed the looks they shot the other when their backs were turned.

Peter pushed through the crowds exiting the old building, eyes darting through the people mingling at the tops of the steps connecting the two schools. There was no sign of Y/N, so he made his way over to one of the stone benches along the path. Recently, the highlight of his day was seeing Y/N before and after school - it always made him feel lighter, better. She was a welcome distraction from his thoughts, and he couldn't imagine his life without the clumsy girl.
Lost in his thoughts, he didn't see someone sit down beside him until they spoke.
"Earth to Peter?" A little too eagerly, he turned towards the voice, but his smile dimmed when he saw it was Lucy perched next to him.
"Oh. Hey." She rolled her eyes at him.
"Oh, sorry I'm not good enough. Waiting for Y/N?"
"You know I didn't mean that Lu. And yeah, she should be out in a minute." Peter's eyes returned to scanning the trickle of students still coming from the schools.
"You finally going to ask her out?"
Peter spluttered at his sister, who's eyes were gleaming.
"Oh c'mon Peter, I may be younger than you but I'm not stupid. I see the way you look at her."
"She's my best friend." Peter said stubbornly, not completely answering Lucy's previous question.
"So? You two are meant to be, I know it. You just have to tell her how you feel."
"Tell who how you feel?" As if she had been summoned by their conversation, Y/N appeared in front of them as Peter turned red and Lucy giggled.
"Nobody. Lucy was just being silly. C'mon, we don't wanna miss the train." With that, Peter stood and almost dragged Y/N away from his younger sister, who was still grinning mischievously.
"Woah, slow down Peter!" Y/N laughed at him, but didn't protest when he still didn't let go of her arm.

They were sitting in the park between their houses, still in school uniform. Silence had fallen between them, but it was comfortable.
Y/N couldn't stop thinking about what Lucy had said earlier. Did Peter like someone? For some reason, the thought made her stomach turn.
So what if he did? She scolded herself. It's not like you have a claim on him.
But, the other side of herself countered, haven't you always thought you and Peter would be together forever?
It was true, she did think that it would always be the two of them against the world. And sure, she'd noticed how he'd matured, and how handsome he had gotten, and fine, maybe she had imagined what it would be like to be held in his arms, to feel his lips against her own...
Dangerous territory. He was her best friend. And apparently he had feelings for someone else.
She looked at him now, his hair seeming even more golden in the sunlight, and couldn't help the words as they blurted out of his mouth.
"So, who was Lucy talking about earlier?" Immediately his cheeks turned red and he glanced at her quickly before looking away.
"I told you, she was just being silly." He laughed, but it sounded forced. Y/N raised her eyebrows, not convinced. It was silent again for a moment, before she spoke again.
"You know you can tell me anything, Peter." It came out quieter than she intended, but she knew he had heard.
"I know." He smiled softly at her. "I just don't want to make things weird."
"Why would it make it weird?" Even as she spoke, she felt her insides twist. Yeah, it would make it weird, since she hated the idea of him with someone else. But why would it be weird for him?
"Because..." Peter hesitated, then looked up at her, and the intensity in his eyes almost took her breath away. "Because you're my best friend."
She didn't know what he was getting at. And it was killing him that she couldn't see how he felt about her; there was also the fact that he was still a bit scared to say it out loud.
"Yeah, and you're mine." Y/N smiled at him hesitantly.
"Well maybe.." He paused again, trying to find the courage. He was a King for God's sake, he shouldn't be this scared. "Maybe I want to be more than that."
The air felt like it had been sucked out of Y/N's lungs; she couldn't breathe, her head was spinning, because surely Peter Pevensie hadn't just said that to her. He wasn't looking at her now, instead focusing on the grass beneath them. When she still didn't answer him, he stood up quickly.
"I'm sorry, I never should have said anything."
"No! I-" Y/N had sprung up after him, but in her haste had in fact tripped over her own feet - just like Peter had joked at the beginning of the day. As she tumbled forwards, he reached out his hands out to steady her. Despite the awkward atmosphere, Peter couldn't help but grin as he muttered,
"I told you so."
She too grinned as she elbowed him, retorting with a quick, "Shut up."
They grinned at each other for a moment, before Y/N's face softened into a small smile. Before she could overthink what she was doing, she leant up and pressed her lips against his cheek. Leaning back, she saw that Peter's smile had widened and his cheeks were dusted pink.
She grinned at him one more time. "I think I can deal with weird."

Thanks @wheres-my-waterbuffalo for the request - I’m so sorry it took me so long (almost a year 😅).
Not sure it’s pining exactly??? But hopefully it’s something close 😂
Request: Reader is a trans boy who gets picked on by some of the other Gladers for being trans, and Newt sticks up for him.
Y/N furiously brushed away the tears from his eyes, even as he could still hear the jeering and laughs aimed in his direction from some of the more idiotic gladers. That’s what he was telling himself anyway; they were idiots, and he shouldn’t listen to what they were saying. But he couldn’t help it. Especially Gally - he came up with the more creative insults, normally to do with what was in Y/N’s pants.
They just didn’t understand.
But he did understand. They hated him, all because he was different to them.
Feeling the tears welling up in his eyes again, he stood from where he was crouched over the garden and started walking brusquely over to the deadheads. At least he’d be alone in there. Before he could take more than a few steps however, he was stopped by someone calling his name, and this time it wasn’t Gally and his stupid lackeys.
Y/N turned to face Newt, hoping the blonde boy couldn’t see the tears in his eyes or the redness in his cheeks.
“Where are you going?”
"Oh...we need more fertilizer..I was just..." He gestured vaguely towards the woods, hoping that explanation would be sufficient enough. But instead Newt frowned, stepping slightly closer.
"That's weird, because I saw Zart go and fetch some already this morning. So, wanna tell me what's really going on?"
Before Y/N could stop himself, his eyes flicked towards where Gally and the builders were now sitting and laughing. It was a quick movement, but enough for Newt's frown to deepen as he followed his gaze. When he saw Gally, his eyes snapped back to Y/N's.
"What did he do?"
"Nothing! Nothing. He didn't do anything..." But even as he was saying it, tears welled up in his eyes again, betraying him.
"Y/N, tell me what he did." Newt's voice had hardened and he took another step closer. "Please."
"He didn't do anything, I promise. He just...said some things again. About me. About who I am. About..." But he didn't need to say anything more, because Newt had already turned and was stalking towards the builders, fists clenched by his side.
"Newt, wait!"
Y/N ran to keep up with the blonde's long strides, brushing furiously at the tears that he couldn't stop from falling.
"Newt, stop, please." He grabbed his arm, pulling on it to no avail. Newt was angry, Y/N could see it in his clenched jaw and feel it in the taut muscles under his hand.
"No, Y/N." He muttered to the boy without looking at him. His gaze was centred on Gally now, and the fire in his eyes caused Y/N to shiver. "I'm not letting him treat you like this anymore."
There was nothing Y/N could do but follow behind him helplessly until they were standing in front of Gally and his lackeys, who nudged each other and quietened when they noticed the way Newt was glaring at their leader. Gally was the last to look up at Newt, a lazy smile on his smug face.
"Can I help you?"
Before anyone could react, Newt reached forward and grabbed Gally by his collar, pulling him up until they were nose-to-nose. Gally's eyes hardened as he tried to push Newt away, but his grip was firm. He shook the builder slightly as he spat out,
"Leave Y/N alone." At this, Gally snorted, shooting a look at Y/N.
"That freak? I ain't said nothing that wasn't true." Newt shook him roughly again, making him turn back to the angry blonde.
"He's not a freak. In fact, he's twice the man you'll ever be." With that, he threw Gally back with so much force that he tumbled on to the floor. Gally opened his mouth to say more, but before he could Newt leant forwards, addressing all of the builders now.
"If any of you ever dare speak to Y/N again, a night in the Slammer is gonna look like a holiday compared to what I'll do to you."
Y/N had never seen Newt so angry. With one last glare at the surrounding Gladers, he put his hand on Y/N's back and guided them both away. They walked in silence until they reached the gardens again. Even then, both were silent as they stood looking at each other. The fire was dying in Newt's eyes, and he took a deep breath as he ran a hand through his messy hair. He opened his mouth to speak, but Y/N beat him to it.
"Thank you. You didn't have to do that for me."
"Of course I did. And I meant what I said. You're twice the man they'll ever be, regardless of how you were born." He sent Y/N a small smile, who smiled softly in return.
"Thanks, Newt. And seriously, thanks for sticking up for me." He reached out for Newt's hand, squeezing it gently. Newt's smile grew as he squeezed back.

“NEWT!”
Something hard slammed into his back, jolting him forward and sending him sprawling onto the grass, winded. Just as he was about to push himself up and give whichever shuck-face had pushed him a piece of his mind, a loud crack followed by a dull but distinct thud echoed through the clearing. Pushing himself up onto his arms and racing to his feet, Newt’s eyes widened as he saw the broken branch, and Y/N’s body trapped beneath it.
“Y/N!” He’d never moved so fast- not since he’d injured his ankle- but in just two strides he was beside her, hands braced against the thick branch, attempting to take away some of its weight. “Someone, help!” He was getting frantic now; Y/N’s body looked tiny and fragile, and the branch was too bloody big and he wasn’t strong enough and was she breathing? He couldn’t see if she was breathing and his own breathing quickened, mind whirring, heart thumping-
Another set of hands joined his on the branch, then another. Newt didn’t take his eyes off Y/N as together, they pulled the branch away. As the two others pushed the rest of the broken tree away, he scooped Y/N into his arms and started limping towards the Med-Hut. Y/N still wasn’t moving, and her eyes were closed, but now that she was in his arms he could see her chest moving up and down. If it weren’t for the blood matted in her hair and trickling down her forehead, she could have been asleep.
“Newt! What the shuck happened?!” Minho was running towards him, still sweating from his day in the maze. His eyes were wide, and a string of curses flew from his mouth as he saw Y/N and the blood.
Newt didn’t break his stride. “I don’t know. The bloody branch fell.” He paused for a second, then said more softly, “She pushed me out the way.”
“Is she gonna be ok? Do you want me to take her?”
Newt pulled her more tightly into his arms. “No, I’ve got her.” They were almost at the Medjacks hut now anyway, and as they got closer, Clint came running out.
“Winston just told me what happened. I’ve set the bed up for her.” Newt nodded as he walked through the door, past the piles of medical supplies, before laying her gently on the bed. It must have been Winston then that had helped him get the branch off her. Newt dimly thought that he would thank him later before his attention was brought back to Clint, now standing over Y/N. He was looking closely at the wound on her head, pulling matted clumps of hair away from her forehead and frowning.
“We need to stitch this up, quickly. Jeff!” Newt hadn’t even noticed the other boy enter the hut. “We need to sterilise it first, then I’m gonna need a needle and thread.” Jeff nodded, turning and rummaging frantically through a box of supplies. “Newt.” He lifted his gaze from Y/N. “You should go. It’s gonna be a while before-”
“I’m not leaving her.” Even Newt was surprised by the authority in his voice, but looking again at Y’N’s pale face, he knew he couldn’t leave her side. Clint hesitated, looking as though he wanted to argue, but nodded after a moment. Jeff reappeared at his side holding a bottle of something and the needle and thread.
Newt sat down on a box close by, close enough that he could grasp Y/N’s hand as the boys worked. He’d been friends with her since she had first come up in the box, surprising the group of boys already inhabiting the Glade. She was fierce and could hold her own, something that had helped her assert her place in the group early on, but what drew Newt to her was how much she seemed to care about people. He’d had a nightmare one night, a few weeks after she had arrived, and when he had gone out into the night for some fresh air, he had found her sitting by herself, staring at the stars. She hadn’t asked any questions, just smiled at him and invited him to sit with her. They had ended up talking until the sun had come up, and ever since had been close. But it wasn’t until now, now that she was lying on that bed with blood on her head and the possibility that she wouldn’t wake up again, that Newt realised how close they had gotten. He couldn’t imagine not being able to chat to her as they worked in the gardens, or watch her argue with Minho about the stupidest of things, or even just sit next to him at the bonfires. She was a steady presence in his life, the person who kept him grounded the most. His best friend.
Or was she more than that?
The thought came, unbidden, into his head. There had been moments when the world seemed to slow down and it was just the two of them that existed. Moments when the glint in her eyes or the smile on her face had taken his breath away, just for a second. And as he realised he couldn’t imagine another second without her by his side, he also realised; he loved her.
Sure, he loved everyone in the Glade, in different ways. He even loved the greenie, for being a glimmer of hope and new life. But what he felt for Y/N, that was different, he was realising. And he wanted to tell her. He needed to tell her.
And so he gripped her hand more tightly, and prayed to whoever was out there that she would wake up.

Lucy smiled down at the dagger she was carefully sharpening. “The girl you were just staring at.”
At this, Edmund rolled his eyes, even as he saw Y/N disappear through an archway out of the corner of his eye. “Give off Lu, I wasn’t staring at anyone.”
“You can lie to Peter or Susan, but you know you can’t lie to me Ed. Who is she?”
“You know who she is, you were the one who told Peter to let her stay.”
“So you admit, you were staring at her?” Edmund didn’t have to look at his sister to know she had a smug smile on her face. Instead, he kept his eyes resolutely on his own sword and whetstone. He wasn’t staring at Y/N, he just happened to glance up as she walked past. And kept his gaze on her to make sure she didn’t trip. Ok, his reasoning sounded weak even to him, and he knew there was no way Lucy would believe anything he would say now. But so what if he was staring a bit? She was pretty, and she was obviously brave enough to smuggle herself on a ship to Narnia. And the way she looked out for her people was admirable to anybody. He just wanted to know a bit more about her, that was all.
Lucy took his silence as defeat, but being Lucy, she wasn’t going to let it go that easily.
“She seems nice. She cleans my room every now and then, but I haven’t talked to her very much yet. She’s quiet- I didn’t think that would be your type.” He knew exactly what she was doing, but he couldn’t help letting it wind him up anyway.
“She’s not my-I don’t-shut up Lu!” Edmund’s face was growing hotter and his temper was rising with everything she was saying. Lucy looked back down at what she was doing and shrugged casually.
“You can lie to yourself, but not to me.” She dragged the whetstone ever-so-gently across her dagger.
“Why are you sharpening that bloody thing anyway? It’s not like you’re ever gonna use it.” Edmund snapped back at her, trying to turn the attention away from himself and his definitely-not-staring staring.
Lucy put down the whetstone before gently sheathing the dagger in its ornate case. “It was given to me by Father Christmas to help defeat the White Witch. Is it so bad that I want to look after it?” The way she was looking at the sheathed dagger made Edmund feel guilty for what he’d said. Her words reminded him that he wasn’t there when his siblings had met Father Christmas, on their way to save him, after he had betrayed them. It still haunted him to this day, and he knew the guilt would never fully fade. Laying his hand over Lucy’s, he smiled apologetically at her.
“I’m sorry. You’re right. You should look after it. I just hope you never have to use it.” She smiled back at him, and he knew he was forgiven. Lucy never held a grudge for long.
Attaching the sheath to the belt of her dress, Lucy stood and looked down at him. Her cheeky smile was back.
“Maybe instead of staring, you could actually go and talk to her.” Before he could respond, she turned and walked away. As a last act of defiance, Edmund stuck his tongue out at her back.

The evenings were Y/N’s favourite time of the day. She’d finished her work, she’d eaten dinner, and she was left to do whatever she pleased. Sometimes, she walked through the castle grounds and just enjoyed the fresh air. Once, she had gone down to the stables and the stable-hands had let her stroke the horses. But the library, that was her favourite place to go. It was quiet, there was never anyone in there to disturb her, and she could read more books than she ever knew could have existed.
She tiptoed down the corridor, candle in hand, until she reached the heavy wooden doors and slid inside. She couldn’t help but smile as she wandered between rows of books, every so often reaching out and running her fingers down a spine. Finally settling on a book, Y/N plucked it carefully from the shelf and walked towards her favourite seat by the window. She was barely two pages in when she was disturbed by a noise, a slight tap that echoed in the silent chamber. Cocking her head, she waited for a moment, hardly daring to move in case someone found her, and she got in trouble for overstepping boundaries. A few moments passed with no other noises, and so she went back to her book. But again, not a page later, she heard the noise again. Certain now that she was not alone in the library, she stood hesitantly. Stupid to be scared, she thought to herself. Not here. Still, she gripped the book tightly in one hand as she moved to the corner of a bookshelf. Her whole body was tense now, braced for a threat of some kind. Hearing a scuffling from behind the shelf, she steeled herself and raised the book above her head. She jumped around the corner, arms already swinging the book down upon-
“Your Majesty!”
Edmund barely dodged the book, his own hands twitching towards his waist before his eyes met hers in a confused daze.
“Y/N?!”
“I’m so sorry!” Y/N dropped the book with a thud, hands coming up over her mouth in shock as she registered who she had almost assaulted. “I thought- I thought someone was trying to sneak up on me-I didn’t realise-are you ok?”
It was only then that she really took the young king in. His eyes were bloodshot, heavy bags underneath them, and his white shirt was damp with sweat. He seemed to realise his state at the same time she did, and he glanced down at himself self-consciously, trying not to meet her eyes. It was unusual for Edmund to be like this; he was always put together, never so dishevelled. He didn’t like giving people a reason to doubt him, his judgement. Not again.
“I’m fine. What are you doing here?”
It was Y/N’s turn to be self-conscious. She glanced down at the book abandoned on the floor before answering.
“I was reading. You said I could use the library so…”
“Of course. It’s just late, I thought everyone was in bed.” He’d never felt so awkward with someone, so vulnerable.
“I like coming when it’s quiet.” There was a moment of silence between them. “Forgive me if I’m prying, but are you sure you’re ok? You look…well, you look like hell.” He looked almost startled at her words, and she quickly opened her mouth to apologise again- because why had she said that, he was a king, she couldn’t just say that to him- when he surprised her by laughing. Now it was her turn to look startled.
“No one’s been that honest with me in a while. Well, other than Lu.” He was smiling now, but his eyes still looked something beyond tired. She smiled back, and Edmund realised he wanted to talk to her about it. About the nightmares. He felt that maybe she, of all people, might understand. Or at the very least, not judge him for it.
“I have nightmares.” He blurted out before he could chicken out. “About her. About the White Witch.” Her eyes softened, and he knew she knew what he meant. Instead of the pity that he was expecting, however, she shrugged slowly.
“You were young. And you made a mistake. I think everyone is allowed to make mistakes. As long as they learn from them.”
Edmund felt a lightness, a relief that he didn’t know he could feel, as he smiled again.
