My 2024 ESC250 Random Draw Winner
For those who saw my post announcing the ESC250 vote being opened and saw my ballot, you may remember that I hinted at a blog piece about the lucky song that I gave my 1 point to. And here is my blog piece on Bosnia and Herzegovina's 2005 entry: "Call Me" by Feminnem.
Bosnia and Herzegovina had a rather prolific run through Eurovision with a fair share of good finishes. Their best finish was a 3rd place in 2006 with "Lejla" by Hari Mata Hari. In their time in Eurovision, the country only failed to qualify once in 2016. They haven't returned to the contest since, but there are some people who are hoping for Bosnia and Herzegovina's eventual return.
Now, let's look at the country's 2005 entry. "Call Me," or the Croatian version "Zovi" won the Bosnian national final BH Eurosong 2005, winning the right to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina in Eurovision.
The song would end up automatically qualifying for the Grand Final after finishing among the 10 highest placing finishers. Feminnem would end up receiving 79 points in the Grand Final, giving Bosnia and Herzegovina a 14th place finish.
This would not mark the end of Feminnem's time in Eurovision, though. They would end up representing Croatia in 2010 with the song "Lako je sve." However, they failed to qualify for the Grand Final.
As I close this dive, I want to end with a little fun fact...a Eurovision Though, if you may. When looking at the English lyrics of the song, the lyrics look very...Eurovision coded. It looks like when translating, the song became an ode to the contest. Which would make sense as 2005 also marked the 50th edition of the contest. There's even a line: "United in the song, that's all it takes/Fifty candles on the party cakes/For the many years of happiness." I think this is clever...and also some interesting foreshadowing considering our slogan is "United by music" twenty years later.
