Had this beautiful sodalite slice that was too big for a pendant and too small for a decorative piece, but I have a cutting machine now😈 Endurance trapped in ice, painted this while listening to the audiobook about the expedition. Now I'm designing a wax model for a setting for it, with nautical motifs (yes, I'm learning wax casting!!)

Thomas Burberry, founder of the British luxury brand, was a scientist as well as a businessman and his textile innovations allowed Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men to survive conditions that should have killed all who participated in the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expeditions of 1909-14. They needed the best and most technologically advanced kit available and that was made in London - by Burberry.
Mr. Burberry had patented a new fabric - Gabardine - in 1888. He effectively reversed the existing waterproofing process, by treating individual cotton fibers with lanolin (a wool fat), before the fabric was woven, and then repeating the process after the garment was constructed for maximum proofing. It was a revolutionary idea that made for more wearable, lightweight and protective outerwear, that performed and did indeed save lives! (FTP)

first day as a 20th century polar explorer i’m selected to go on the super special sledging trip with my polycule but succumb to scurvy and my preexisting heart condition i will never tell anybody about and they have to carry me back to the ship. second day as a 20th century polar explorer the dominant member of my polycule convinces my favorite boyfriend to vote me out survivor-style and send me home on the invalid ship so i am now a bitter 27 year-old divorceé. third day as a 20th century polar explorer i’m begging wealthy widows for money but my evil gay kleptomaniac brother aids in the theft of the crown jewels of ireland and shames the family so nobody will give me a ship. fourth day as a 20th century polar explorer one of my benefactors makes me bring a huge fuckoff car to antarctica and i run out of space for food so all of my men almost starve and the car doesn’t even work. fifth day as a 20th century polar explorer my evil ex dies and i finally get to go back to the pole but my ship gets fucked and i have to spend 2 years dragging my men home and when i get back the royal geographical society are still publicly cucking me and nobody cares because of wwi. sixth day as a 20th century polar explorer i round up the boys for one last hurrah but die of that same preexisting condition before we can even get anywhere like a #boss. which is also what they call me.

found an ebay listing of over 170 polar exploration books for a price that felt genuinely miraculous, so of course i spent the whole of today (with my good friend bryn) driving to pick them up… really felt like a once in a lifetime find!!! so here’s a very (sort of) organised haul post… feel free to zoom in

some more scott & some misc explorers/expeditions
franklin expedition and other arctic figures/expeditions
misc antarctic, arctic and general polar exploration (probably some overlap… very sleepy arranging all of these)
and various newspaper clippings/stamps/other ephemera that fell out of the books. a lot of them had dedications and names on the inside covers but this was by far my favourite 😭 so many great surprises
the man who i bought them from said he’s spent quite a few years collecting them all… told him they would be very very appreciated in their new home
