Song Review: The Travelin’ McCourys - “Daydreamer”

The Travelin’ McCourys sing the praises of home and a constant companion on “Daydreamer.”

The sprightly interpretation of Eric and Leigh Gibson’s song announces the forthcoming (no release date) One Chord that Rings True and finds the quintet leaning on bluegrass instrumentation with short bursts of banjo, mandolin, guitar and fiddle breaking through the melody as the McCourys sing in harmony:

When I’m down and lonely/so lonely that I don’t know what to do/she’s the one and only/the only one that I come running to

“Daydreamer” a hot little number, cooled only by the fact the McCourys have several songs of its general tempo and arrangement in their existing repertoire.

Song Review: The Travelin’ McCourys with Eric Gibson and Dré Anders - “Old Man”

In covering “Old Man,” the Travelin’ McCourys hew closely to Neil Young’s template but weirdly - and unwisely - scramble the song’s essential banjo riffs.

It’s a rare error in the McCourys’ long line of typically impeccable covers - one that’s not helped at all by Eric Gibson and Dré Anders’ harmonies on the chorus.

This may explain why the bluegrass band has been sitting on the in-studio video since 2016. Why they decided to release it now is an open question.
