THE ARTHUR LIPSETT BIRTHDAY PARTYÂ
ERIC GAUCHER IN PERSON WITH THE ARTHUR LIPSETT PROJECT AND CIRCA. 1967, PLUS LIPSETT’S ASTOUNDING FLUXES ON 16MM! SATURDAY MAY 14 DOORS 7:30, SHOW 8PM BY DONATION (SUGGESTED $5) NO LATE ENTRY! GOLD SAUCER, DOMINION BUILDING (207 W Hastings St)Â
The month of May marks both the birth (80 years ago) and the death (30 years ago) of one of Canada’s most talented and original experimental filmmakers, Arthur Lipsett.Â
We are thrilled to have filmmaker ERIC GAUCHER in town to present his stunning documentary THE ARTHUR LIPSETT PROJECT: A DOT ON THE HISTOMAP. This full-length documentary introduces us to a man who defined experimental filmmaking at the NFB in the 1960s. His first film, Very Nice, Very Nice, was nominated for an Academy Award. George Lucas claims him as an significant influence, as did Stanley Kubrick. Featuring a broad array of interviews with those who knew and worked with him, this is both testament and celebration, as well as an incredible introduction to his body of work. PLUS: A new short experimental film by Gaucher entitled CIRCA. 1967,  built from 8mm footage shot by a group of anonymous filmmakers in late ‘60s New York City. Both historical documentary and lyrical essay CIRCA. 1967 observes and celebrates universal life in a familiar context. AND we are very excited to be able to present an actual 16mm PRINT of Lipsett’s penultimate masterwork FLUXES, a disturbing reflection on the world around us contrasting rapid-fire found footage in a desperate search for transcendence. THIS IS A SPECIAL BIRTHDAY - DON’T MISS IT! Thanks to ERIC GAUCHER, NFB, GOLD SAUCER and the VANCOUVER BOARD OF PARKS AND RECREATION.
