… It was just sad in a “what could have been” sort of way. It’s just a bad movie that leaves you shaking your head as you leave the theater saying, “What was that?” It had some very good moments, but strangely misfired. While the main body of the movie makes some excellent points regarding how we should think about the nativity scene, the Christmas tree and St. Nick, those points are muddied by a sea of confusion…

  I often find myself angry at Christian film because the message that’s conveyed is built on pop-theology and is poorly done. This time I’m depressed because the message of this film, as optimistic and excellent as it is, is with the very best of intentions, misrepresenting the excellence of Jesus Christ. A good message done poorly is no credit to the message. I wish that the producers would have worked harder to give that important message a delivery it is worthy of. In art, it is not enough to merely communicate a message. It should be communicated well. This was simply a missed opportunity.

Last week we examined the problems of J.M. Carroll’s anachronistic understanding of history. [...] Because Carroll claims that the Baptist line can be traced through various historical groups; we will thus examine them in this post, as it is central to his thesis. Carroll actually does little to establish these groups with any factual link to Baptists, but nonetheless he does list them in support of his claim.

  So what groups comprise this Trail of Blood from his title?

  “Among them were Donatists, Paterines, Cathari, Paulicians, and Ana Baptists; and a little later, Petro-Brussians, Arnoldists, Henricians, Albigensis, and Waldenses.”

  Let’s take a look at these so called “Baptists” shall we?

For those who, like me, grew up in an independent, fundamental Baptist church you may be familiar with a little book by J.M. Carroll entitled, “The Trail of Blood: Following the Christians Down through the Centuries or, The History of Baptist Churches from the Time of Christ, Their Founder, to the Present Day.” While that is quite a mouthful to say, this book published in 1931 is commonly referred to as simply, “The Trial of Blood.”

  The main thesis of this booklet is that Baptists are not protestants, were thus never part of the Roman Catholic Church and can trace their continued denominational line all the way back to John the Baptist (which Carroll on more than one occasion implies may be a proper denominational name to John by Christ himself). This post, and the next two that will follow, will examine the claims of the book and show them to be without any historical warrant.

As the Thanksgiving holiday comes again this year, we should remember the Thanksgiving meal that Christians celebrate all year long, the Eucharist. Apart from the theological prejudice that is heaped onto the term, Eucharist simply means “Thanks Giving.” We can see this aspect of the supper when Christ himself inaugurated his covenantal meal…

  If all the Supper does is make us realize our sin and leave us in a self absorbed state because of the week’s failures, then we have missed a vital aspect of its proper observance.  When we properly understand the Lord’s Supper we should be moved to thanksgiving.

  Unfortunately, when the issue of the Lord’s Supper comes up, the response many times is, “How often do we have to do it?” rather than, “Wow, we get to do it!”

Where to begin? Start with the leaders of your local church. Ask them to what, if any, Confession of Faith your church holds. If it is a “made up” confession (i.e., we just searched the internet for one that was concise enough to put on our website), ask them if there is a broader confession of faith that would be affirmed by your church and/or denomination (i.e., are we Westminster, Heidelberg, or Baptist Confession people?)   Some Practical Benefits of Catechetical Instruction [Jeffery Smith]

1. Learning a catechism teaches basic mental discipline

2. It also requires them to use their brains in thinking about biblical truth

3. Memorizing a good catechism aids in producing minds that are able to think logically about biblical truth

4. Memorizing a good catechism also aids our children in communicating the truth clearly, precisely and succinctly

5. Another thing about a good catechism is that it teaches us, not only the right answers, but the right questions

6. Catechizing provides the basic building blocks of truth that will help our children to better comprehend the whole of Scripture as they grow older
