seldom had there been a time since his incident that orion would willingly forego his shirt; beneath the spring sun, the crawling scar between his shoulder blades glistened like a target at his back — and indeed, it once was. he’d gotten used to the whispers and the sympathetic looks, the observations of his court trying to put the pieces together, but it still proved to be too much for him to bare in the castle’s training grounds. many of the knights would wear their scars like a badge of honor, congratulating him on living another life — but to orion, that of which still pained him on the nights his nightmares reached his mind . . . and he looked to the mark as a reminder of what once was, rather than what is.
perhaps that is why he felt more comfortable practicing his swordsmanship in the private courtyard; there, at least, the eyes would be limited to those he knows. dancing a dangerous game, his muscles rippled in apprehension as he dives towards the trainer with a wooden mockery coated in paint — every day proved to be a new challenge, and ever day proved to be an even greater success. they stagger back and forth, filing the gaps of whatever opportunity lay bare, but it isn’t until orion gets the upper hand and lands a few thin red marks along their back, that they separate for the time being.
“ see, there. “ out of breath but not yet out of mind, a smile dances across his features as the prince gestures towards the painted streaks. “ that’s four on you. you’re getting slow. “ a laugh bubbles forth, and he almost fails to catch the gesture towards his own figure. glancing down, the truth is widely apparent — streaks of red illuminate against his pale skin, earning a groan from the male. “ i stand corrected, my friend. “ his hand raises to smudge the lines, looking up after a moment — it is only then that his attention is drawn to a figure grazing upon their altercation, innately turning to his back is facing away. “ oh, hello there! “ he beckons a wave, a sheepish smile dancing across his lips.
