Levi is a samurai of the entourage of an important Japanese daimyo, Darius Zackley. He's skilled both with the sword and in the cha no yu, the art of tea. He was once a poor commoner but was found by another samurai, Erwin Smith, and became part of the royal guard.

He secretly trains the daimyo's only heir Hange who wants to become a samurai too. They soon become a skillful warrior too. In exchange they teach Levi the shodo, the art of writing. As the rival daimyos, Zeke and Eren Yaeger, challenges Zackley they both are caught up in a feud that causes the end of their peaceful life. Daimyo Zackley is killed by Shogun Floch and his Yaegerists, so Levi is forced to become a ronin, a samurai with no master. Together with Hange, he roams the lands vowing vengeance against the Yaeger brothers.

After the death of Yakuza boss Erwin Smith, known as The Commander, a new one rises to guide the Wings of Freedom clan. They're known as The Mad Scientist, no one knows if they're a man or a woman, rumours say they experiment on those they capture, with monstrous methods of tortures. When The Commander was killed, they lost an eye during the fight; they also survived a massive fire that left them scarred all over their body, tattoos half erased. Some say they're so brave they had them re-drawn over the scars.
