This is Sabriel and they're the Alchemist. Their age is unclear, as their memories before their master are blurred by blood. Herminius is their companion, an eerily intelligent parrot-looking carnivore with a taste for humans - and especially Vere's ears.
Sabriel remembers flashes and feelings, remembers being warm, held, the curse only strange black stains on their skin that did nothing other than perplex them. They remember laughing, learning to braid their hair, the happiness when their first adult fangs came in, the games played with children with slit pupils and claws like theirs.
They remember their parent's loving hug becoming a crazed chokehold as the curse took its first victim.
Only a strange creature's intervention saved Sabriel from their own curse, a bird swooping from high in the sky, turning into a horrifying abomination and all but mauling their parent.
Sabriel's master took them off the hands of their family after the horrible accident, and Sabriel soon forgot the names and faces of their kin, as well as the sound of their own voice. Their master became the only guide, and the bird who killed Sabriel's parent decided to follow them and became Sabriel's only friend.
Sabriel flourished in alchemy and spellcraft under their master, finding their thirst of knowledge to be an almost bottomless well. The bird, who accepted from Sabriel the name Herminius, stayed by his companion's side, displaying an unnatural intelligence that made him a close confidant and helper.
After their master turned on them, the Senobium became the only place where Sabriel could hope to find a cure to their curse. So, accompanied by their faithful friend, the journey to Eridia began.

Herminius is a creature of unknown origin and purpose. His kind once roamed the Fogfall, hunting in flocks anything they could take down, from Monsters to unlucky humans who wandered in the Fogfall. Where Herminius' flock went and how he came to be in Sabriel's village, not even he remembers.
Herminius' age is unkown, and his companion Sabriel is not sure either how old he is or just how smart he is. He talks, if at a basic and stilted level, but seems to understand humans perfectly, even sign language, and often speaks in Sabriel's stead.
The only human he trusts and cares for is Sabriel, and sees most others who try to approach them as threats to his friend. In particular, he hates Vere, and may often be caught swooping down to attempt a bite at his ears - though unsuccessfuly... yet.
