I think it’s pretty clear that I’m not a fan of physical contact. I’ll wait for the fake gasp, don't worry. Anyway, the point is it’s pretty clear and everyone’s picked up on it okay? I’m not saying Mr college girls shook me up or anything but his grabby hands have certainly not improved my standing on it. At least if nothing else, me and Bridge Jr have been far less at each other’s throats since our little ‘chat’ in the women’s bathroom.
“You should move that block there.” Hence why I’m not actively punching him for backseat playing my game on our flight currently.
“I’ll put it where I like.” He is right though so I move the block into its position and watch the majority of the board clear. There’s a hum of satisfaction that I ignore.
“Alright team, here’s what we’re working with.” Roman places a set of papers down for each of us to look through. “There’s only one murder but we’ve been requested personally so they can keep the investigation under wraps.”
“Yeah cause nothing says under wraps like involving the FBI.” Mutters Gomez from his seat causing a quiet laugh from Agent Bridge. Roman continues as if nothing happened.
“This morning a college student was found dead with an arrow in the chest. Current analysis shows that it occurred late last night some time between 10pm and 1am. We’ll be meeting with the school’s principal for more details.”
“And here I thought we’d be having a break from school.” I mutter mostly to myself. Only when I hear Bridge Jr’s snickers behind me do I realise it was audible. So audible in fact Roman smiles at me before taking his seat for the rest of the flight.
Trust me the college was not that impressive despite the principal's insistence we tour every inch of it before seeing the crime scene. It has a pool though so that’s pretty cool. The body had been moved by the time we arrived but that didn’t stop us. With permission from the coronary team we started to reconstruct everything. Agent Bridge is left in the centre as we all stand in a circle around him. Agent Bishop stands behind me rather than in the circle. Whether she’s trying to direct my lens or see through it I can’t tell. From the pictures it’s clear the arrow entered on an angle but we can’t test that arrow until we have a dummy cause I’m sure no one wants us filling Agent Bridge with holes. But perspective should for now. I take a look around me as I aim, checking for places to set up with a ranged weapon. There's trees around but the foliage is rather thick.
“What do you see?” Agent Bishop asks from beside me. I try not to jump having forgotten she was there and come back to face Agent Bridge.
“There isn’t a viable shooting position from this angle, nowhere to hide and if the kid had run his body would’ve been at a different angle.” Bridge Jr says my thoughts can be useful but only if I say them rather than barreling head first into trouble. I’m able to compromise.
“Let’s go around the circle then, you let me know when a good shot lines up.”
We’d continued like that until dark, narrowing down the shot path each time before searching the campus for our dorm rooms. Due to age I was now sharing with Bridge Jr but I suppose it could be worse. The campus would be on lockdown so no one would be around. In theory.
“Your cogs are turning.” My attention turns to Bridge Jr sitting on his own bed, his eyes focused on my expression.
“Say you just committed a murder, or maybe you did it with some friends. How’re you feeling about the curfew?” My eyes lock and for a moment I swear he reads my mind.
“I wouldn’t fancy it. There’s likely still evidence to destroy.” Now while I wasn’t going to give poor Bridge Jr a heart attack by having him break curfew it would give us a starting for tomorrow about whether everyone was where they should be.
I dreamt about drowning that night. Water all around as I sink eternally. If Bridge Jr had heard me scream… well nothing was said.
The next couple of days didn’t wield much except for the frequent nightmares I had of drowning. Twice now I’d swear I’d woken up to find Jax holding me but he was always back in his bed by morning. He never said anything to the others or to me. That’s hardly the matter at hand though. No one wanted to give up their friend. I can’t blame them. I wouldn't want to admit my friend’s a murderer either. Bad reputation and all that. However, today something finally clicked. The school did not have an archery club we were sorely disappointed to find out but it did have an event centred around hunting. Jax and I had been sent off to find out what we could about previous winners and look at the equipment. Our shock had been that the murder victim, Harry Wret, was the winner of the last three events.
“Jealousy?” Asks Jax as we examine the rest of the photos.
“It’s looking that way.” A bow tightens as I finish my sentence. Quickly I pull Jax behind me as we both turn to see a boy, likely just older than us. An arrow aimed right at us.
“Don’t move.” There’s an inflection in his tone. Fear.
“Why don’t you tell us what’s going on?” I say calmly. Maybe apathetically is the better term. The bow shakes.
“You’re going to do as I say.” Focusing less on the idea of being impaled I now see that the arrow is not in fact pointed at us. It’s just slightly left. It doesn’t seem like he knows that.
“Trust me?” I don’t turn to Jax but the boy ahead looks confused.
“Yes.” I shove Jax hard to the right and keep pushing even as the arrow flies and we slam past the kid and out of the door.
“What the fuck?” I don’t let Jax say anything else as we continue sprinting down the corridor, my hand firmly clamped around Jax’s wrist. We manage to turn a corner and stop.
“He can’t aim. His perception is off. Go find the team. I’ll keep him busy.” Once I know he’s heard me I move to leave but a pressure holds my arm.
“We can go together. Don’t run into fire.” I know exactly where to go.
“We can’t let him get away. I’m not running into fire. I’m running into water.”
Ironic that I would dream of drowning and then decide the pool is the perfect place to catch a killer. Or in his case an unintentional one. The shots couldn’t line up because they weren’t supposed to. Another arrow flies wide of my left as I continue running. I’m definitely against hunting from this point on. I take a tight corner and burst through the doors to the pool which is fortunately empty. Another wide shot. Thank someone this kid can’t aim. Especially because of my stupid plan. I head for the diving board.
Mid way up he changes tactics. Rather than shooting he takes an arrow and starts to climb up after me. I can work with that. Or I could until he managed to jab me in the ankle slowing me down significantly. My boots had taken the brunt but there was still blood collecting in my shoe and falling onto his face which I painfully scaled to the top. Only once up there do I realise how high I am and that I can’t swim.
“I said don’t move but look what you did. I didn’t mean to kill Harry. He was just walking past and it all happened so quickly. If you hadn’t found the pictures we all could’ve walked away.” He doesn’t come closer. Instead he pulls the bow over his head and aims for me. Slightly out but I only have one direction left.
“You don’t have to do this. It was an accident.” I spot Jax entering quietly with his dad in tow.
“I just wanted to win. No more second place.” How on earth was this kid in second place? Not the time. My heels glance over the edge. Well at least there’s water this time.
“FBI. Lower your weapon!” Agent Bridge shouts causing the guy to panic and release. Thankfully I planned for this shit and I’d already fallen back from the platform. The arrow sails over me as I plunge into the depths below.
This really is just like my nightmares. Falling eternally, unable to breathe. Then arms wrap around my waist and I’m pulled back to the surface. Another set of arms pull me out and I hardly have a chance to open my eyes before I realise I’m being hugged. Fully enveloped. There’s heavy breathing and I’m glad my hearing aids still work. Soon I realise it’s Jax holding me, his face buried in my shoulder while we’re a tangle of limbs.
“You can’t swim.” He states, still breathing hard.
“I can’t.” He holds me tighter. I’d tell him to get off but right now I’m not sure he’d listen.
I can’t swim but I knew he’d pull me out.
