I also learned about how curriculum and what teachers teach matter. Students of color often times feel un engaged and under represented because the content that is being presented to them is not relevant. Students need to feel heard and comfortable in the classroom. What we teach should be equitable and accessible to students of all different races, ethnicities, genders, religions and more. We should celebrate our students differences, allow them to teach each other about one another's cultures. With that being said, we need to be aware of equity traps, and artificially creating equity in our schools. 

Having an equitable classroom should the foundation of creating and leading an effective learning environment for students. For a long time, people thought that classrooms should be equal, meaning that students should be receiving the same benefits and supports in order to reach the same goal. While this goal was well intended, it is clear that not all students need the same resources to reach the same goal. Many times, this has to do with ability or socioeconomic status. To have an equitable classroom, rather than an equal classroom, means that individual students are given different supports depending on their need in order for them to reach the same goals. The hope for equitable education is that someday, students will not have to be given specialized supports because they will already be provided for systemically.
