Determination
We all know it.
Every equestrian is confronted by it at one point.
For some it comes sooner.
For others later.
This one point that could change it all.
This one point …
...where you feel like quitting.
The point where you hate going to the barn.
The point where you keep on bragging about how amazing your sport is...
...But actually you hate it.
The point where saddling up your horse doesn't fill you with excitement and happiness but with frustration.
When you worked on the same problem over and over again...
… and nothing seems to get better.
When you fail at the same thing over and over again.
When you feel like being stuck.
Nothing ever seems to change.
The own horse you just can't afford.
The lease horse you are only allowed to do a few things with.
The lesson horse you ride far to few to achieve anything.
The lacking indoor arena.
The trainer who doesn't see your struggles and problemes.
And then there are others...
you see them having success.
You see them reaching your goals.
Everything seems so easy when they do it.
And you think...
Maybe I should just stop?
Maybe giving up would make things easier?
Just a new sport? A restart? Another barn? Another horse?
You come up with excuses for not going to the barn.
Depressed. Dissatisfied.
But eventually you find old photos of you.
Sitting on a pony with a wide smile plastered over your whole face.
And you start remembering...
The little goals you achieved during your riding career.
The first canter.
The first trail ride.
The first jump.
The first time bareback.
The small things the small kid on the pony would be amazed by.
And suddenly you start missing the saddle underneath again.
You start missing your horse.
You start missing all their flaws that made you curse.
You start missing all the little things you love about them.
You start missing the soft nose.
You start missing the scent and the feeling when you bury your nose in their mane.
You start missing the freedom you feel while cantering.
No.
You haven't been stuck.
It just felt like it for some time.
But when looking back on the first ride on the horse you now ride regularly...
Oh you accomplished a lot.
Remember the first jog?
It was pretty hard to sit, right?
Remember riding the first circle?
Looked more like an egg, right?
Remember the first trail ride?
It felt like you'll never be able to galopp through the forest without losing control, right?
There have been so many problems you both had. So many times you thought:
'Why do I always get the crazy, stubborn horse? Every horse does this thing without any problems but mine of course not!'
But you learned a lot of things.
Now you know what determination really means.
Determination.
You read about it in a lot of equestrian quotes.
You had it all the time.
Otherwise you wouldn't be where you are now.
Determination is what keeps us moving forward and making progress.
And guess what...
..the one spoiled girl who seemed to reach anything you ever dreamt of...
..she probably quits after failing a few times. She probably quits when being confronted by the same problem you have now.
Because she's used to having success. She's used to get the best horse possible. She's used to having other people solving her horses flaws. She just sits on top and smiles.
Let her smile...
One day you'll be better than her..
Because the will to work hard and determination vs. Daddy's money...
You know what wins.
You know that it's worth in the end.
And now go see your horse...
Look in their eyes...
… and you'll know why you won't quit.
The wind of heaven is tht which blows between a horse's ear. Merry Christmas everyone!
