He walked into that classroom with the same hope every child carries.
A pencil.
A notebook.
A quiet belief that school was where futures begin.
But before the lesson started, he learned something else.
The teacher looked at him not as a student—but as a problem.
Not because he was loud.
Not because he was cruel.
Not because he lacked ability.
Because he was Black.
Imagine being that young and already feeling an adult’s hatred.
While other children were taught letters and numbers, he was taught where some people believed he belonged.
Less than.
Separate.
Unwanted.
That is the cruelty of racism.
It steals confidence before it steals opportunity.
It wounds children long before they understand why.
Yet he came anyway.
Sat down anyway.
Opened his books anyway.
Tried to learn anyway.
Because courage is often quiet, especially in children.
The teacher may have tried to shame him.
But history remembers who was trying to grow… and who was trying to stop it.
How many brilliant Black children were made to suffer simply for wanting the same education as everyone else?
Look at the police, who were just as racist and probably worse. May their souls suffer for every act of hate they committed while living.
Aight so last year my town was having an Anti-Guns march and I really wanted to go because it was raising awareness to gun violence. I asked my Dad to drive me because I didn't have my license yet and he straight up said "No, they're just looking for money and don't actually care about our wellbeing."
So I was pretty put out because that was bullshit because the march was organized by local high schoolers.
THREE DAYS LATER my Dad comes to me and asks "Why did you want to go to that march? I never asked you."
By this time the march had happened and was over with. I just told him "it was a good cause to get behind." and left it at that
Now, a year later, his parents, my grandparent, are basically shoving propaganda down my sisters' throats about how George Floyd was a criminal and the Seattle Autonomous Zone is a horrible place and I can't stand it. It's all "liberalism is evil!" And "liberals want to destroy this country!"
But anyone with half a brain knows that this isn't true. Half of my school district is in poverty but they get ignored because "everyone gets equal chances!" Half of my school district fears the police for one reason or another. Half of my school district is on free meals because they cannot afford to pay for fucking food.
And liberalism and laziness is to blame?
I don't pretend to be an expert on what's going on in today's world, but I know what I see and I know it's wrong. If the right won't listen to our protests, then let them listen to the children who are suffering. My school is all nice and clean while other schools in my same district are dirty and have roaches.
I know how much privilege I have and I know how much privilege my friends don't have and it's astounding. Where I live and the color of my skin should not dictate the level of education I receive and yet it does.
I want reform because people I love need reform.
End the bullshit. If not for yourself, then for the kids.
But in this country you need not be told how much female Education is neglected, nor how fashonable it has been to ridicule Female learning, tho I acknowled[ge] it my happiness to be connected with a person of a more generous mind and liberal Sentiments. I cannot forbear transcribing a few Generous Sentiments which I lately met with upon this Subject. If women says the writer are to be esteemed our Enemies, methinks it is an Ignoble Cowardice thus to disarm them and not allow them the same weapons we use ourselves, but if they deserve the title of our Friends tis an inhumane Tyranny to debar them of priviliges of ingenious Education which would also render their Friendship so much the more delightfull to themselves and us. Nature is seldom observed to be niggardly of her choisest Gifts to the Sex, their Senses are generally as quick as ours, their Reason as nervious, their judgment as mature and solid. Add but to these natural perfections the advantages of acquired learning what polite and charming creatures would they prove whilst their external Beauty does the office of a Crystal to the Lamp not shrowding but discloseing their Brighter intellects. Nor need we fear to loose our Empire over them by thus improveing their native abilities since where there is most Learning, Sence and knowledge there is always observed to be the most modesty and Rectitude of manners.
