Static Shock Appreciation Week Day 1, Why do You Like Static?
Other than the obvious, I started liking Virgil from the very beginning. This grew into a love for him and the show as the audience saw more sides of his personality, the different ways he interacted with people, and the way he settled any problems he had. Virgil from the get go always has the person he’s trying to help in mind even if they’re the villain. Over the course of the series he ended up helping many people either get rehabilitated or get the help they needed whether bang baby or not. Being chained to Hotstreak, making an effort to help Maureen get the mental help she needed, helping Alva reconnect with his son, helping Aquamaria return to herself, and many many more.
Virgil is not afraid to step in a go for the long haul for those that he loves. See the countless times he’s saved Richie while he was a civilian and even more times as he was Gear. He puts the people he loves first which is why the relationships he has with his mother, father, sister, and friends are so impactful to the audience. Going back in time to save his mother and his reaction to Richie being shot and Daisy being hurt in the crossfire of a battle immediately come to mind. The biggest indicator of this was going rogue in order to save his father. He even fought Gear, his best friend and partner, to protect his father.
Virgil also has made mistakes like ending up at the big bang or going on a violent hunt for Puff in an attempt to get revenge, but he always comes back to his morals. He threw away the gun in the first episode and he listened to Rubberband man who told him that Daisy was hurt because of his own ego. He’s a teenager that has a lot of responsibility, but he takes it in stride and solves his problems with the help from people around him.
There’s so much more you can say about Virgil Hawkins, but it’d would completely make this post never ending.
