Inien on Friendship: "Friends don't exist out[side] of direct convenience. I've seen you guys try to stick together despite stratifying slightly, and that, frankly, terrifies me in this day and age." (The fact that Inien has no frame of reference for friendships that exist beyond what is convenient at any given moment is DEEPLY ALARMING. Did she have no normal friendships growing up? Did she not see her peers pursue friendships? Was her family equally cutthroat? Was this viewpoint something she was taught, or something she pieced together herself? Why is she terrified of people choosing to stick together?)

Thog on Friendship: "Doing right by your friends is like the hardest shit in the world. [...] Cooperating with people, it's difficult as hell! [...] you're gonna fuck up all the time, probably forever! People are hard!" (He's not wrong, per say, but Thog's idea of friendship brings to mind his role of "middle manager." He's the guy who would have to keep probably multiple higher-ups and underlings happy—interpersonal relationships are mostly negotiations, deals, bargains. His ""friendships"" have probably been limited to "coworker I don't actively hate" for at least a couple years now.)

Inien on The Gang: "In the future, if I ever went on some... titanic voyage into my own self-psyche, could I count on you guys to come after me? Is that what you're telling me right now?" (Inien is still struggling to come to terms with people who will care about her when she's not literally right there being useful. The easiest way for her to frame the gang and her relationship with them is "people who will stop me from breaking myself if I go too far." Remind you of anyone else? *cough* Ashe *cough*. I also think its interesting how she deflects by asking if that's what he (Gregor) is saying to her. It's not her OWN views! She's not putting herself in a vulnerable position by asking them to come after her! She's just saying what he's thinking!)

Thog on The Gang: "All of you value different shit—I just want to make money, goddamn it! Here you come with your morals, complicating my freakin' brain! God! [...] All I wanted to say is, we're a business, we're a team, we're in it together." (Thog's interactions with other people has been limited to Meadeshire for years (and, before that, Alaran). That is to say, a very money-centric environment. He's still having a hard time coming to terms with people who care about stuff beyond that, but he's able to justify his own involvement (to himself) by reasserting the business/team aspect of The Gang's relationship (both businesses and teams can create environments where you work with people you might not care about). Jokes on you, you depressed bastard, you're part of this found family now and there's no getting out of it.)
