I love Eowyn’s character so much, and it bothers me when people call Tolkien sexist, etc because of the whole “getting married and becoming a healer” thing. We’re introduced to Eowyn being hungry for battle and a chance to prove herself. She’s young, naïve, and frustrated. She knows the role women play in her society, and she wants more than anything to defy that, and that’s what makes her such an awesome addition, especially for Tolkien, who has like no badass female characters in lord of the rings save her. She’s enchanted by Aragorn, some people say she’s in love with him, I personally think she’s more fascinated by him, and curious. He’s an example for her, someone that she knows doesn’t underestimate her. She has that amazing “I am no man” moment which I love SO MUCH, she defies the rules of her society and marches into battle anyway, taking on one of the most powerful beings in middle earth. But she learns. She’s a real person. She learns that battle isn’t about glory and honour, it’s about death. It’s about fighting for your own life, and the people around you. There’s nothing good in it. There’s no need to prove yourself by giving up your own life along with countless others. Tolkien knew this, he fought in a war, and that reflects itself throughout the entire book. But there is good in saving lives, not ending them. That’s what makes her such a good character. If she had stayed badass shieldmaiden of Rohan, she would hardly have developed at all. Watching so many people die around her turned her off that path. That’s not sexist, it’s not anti-feminist, it’s not taking away her badassery. She’s not just being married off and becoming a simple maiden. It’s literally reflecting everything that Tolkien is trying to convey throughout the entire series: it’s not about ending lives and fighting and being strong and seeking glory, it’s about the little things in life that keep you going and push you forward so that you can be happy with yourself, and it’s about extraordinary determination. Instead of giving up, Eowyn decides to change herself, and save every life she can. She learns to “love all things that grow, and are not barren.” She doesn’t lose her fiery spirit, and I could bet you she’d be a pretty badass mom. That’s why it bothers me so much when people get angry over her decision. Anyways, this has all been opinion. Also, you would think I would know how to draw sweaters like the one in this picture considering I wear them all the damn time. But I guess not.
