I was wondering how quickly you play through the game for this? Like according to the comics you've been fighting Lance for 3 weeks ish. Did you already complete a lot of the game and write down things to draw for comics as you went or do you just turn it on sleep mode for a while?? I'm just wondering how you stay interested over such a long period of time!
Hi! I began this nuzlocke challenge on March 11, 2016, and my battle with the Elite Four/Champion ended on August 11, 2016. So, about 5 months, although there were plenty of breaks. I did write down details (and draw sketches of the pages) while I was playing, but drawing/coloring on the computer and the update schedule made the comic really lag behind where I actually was in the game. The two-panel comic style didn’t really help move the plot along either, but it did give me time to figure out how to pace the events, and draw it. For example, this arc with the E4/Lance in the comics has taken about 3 months, but in the game it took maybe an hour or two.
It was definitely a little weird having this disconnect between where I was in the game and where the comics were; especially when something big happened, like the Lake of Rage, or these E4 battles. But I’m also a little familiar with this, just from reading blogs of cartoon storyboarders and webcomic artists, who work on something exciting and then can’t talk about it for many months, haha! So, what helped me stay interested was just remembering what I enjoyed about this project. If I was in a boring part of the game, or the comic, then I would think about the exciting part and how those pages should look, or foreshadow clues that I could slip in early, that sort of thing. That would help me keep moving forward so that I could reach those better parts sooner.
Also, taking breaks to do other things that you enjoy is important too, because burnout is an awful awful thing. I once worked on another project that was work-intensive and updated often, and I was not very happy, at all. I love it and I’m proud of what I accomplished, but I would never do that kind of project again. But even after 14 months of near-daily work, I still genuinely enjoy working on this comic, so this is a new experience for me.
So, my advice, for anyone thinking about doing this kind of project, or any kind of project really, is to GO FOR IT! Do your best! But also TAKE BREAKS! Enjoy other parts of your life! And if it turns out you really don’t like working on it, that’s okay! Try something else! Or try to change it into a different format, because maybe that will work better for you? Don’t be afraid to listen to how you feel about something, because continuing to work on something that makes you miserable, is no good for you or the people that it is for. But when you find that thing that makes you happy, even though it’s still technically work, that’s something amazing, and I really hope that you all find it. =)
Are you healing your pokes in between rounds of the elite four? Sorry if you already mentioned it I totally forgot and couldn't find it
Good question! And no, I hadn’t mentioned it anywhere. YES, I have been healing my team between each Elite Four battle. :)
