The Social Element
I want to take a moment to reflect on the social aspect of this project - i.e., sharing each day's enso via this blog. I've noticed that I've been able to relinquish my attachments to the outcome of each day's creative effort rather easily. I'm finding it easier and easier to love the ensos that resemble horseshoes more than circles, those that are inconsistent in brushstroke, and those that are otherwise "imperfect." I have noticed, however, that I do keep a fairly close and interested eye on the number of likes/re-blogs that each enso receives. And in some ways, I am creating judgments of each enso based on these measures of social feedback, coming almost exclusively from people I have never met and know nothing about. It's quite an interesting time we live in, when we can assign value to art based on the opinions of others we do not know. I love that technology can connect our creations to an audience unbounded by geography. I love that the audience can provide feedback in a single click. And, I find it fascinating how this feedback can then inform the creator's perception of his/her creation. We live in such an amazing and interesting time.
