spiders have not killed anyone in australia in almost 50 years and snakes only kill 1-2 people here per year. the overwhelming majority of snake bites (90%!!!) occur when the person has attempted to handle the snake, most often when they're trying to kill or capture it. spiders and snakes are less likely to kill you than a car crash (over a thousand a year) or accidental poisoning (over a hundred a year) or a lightning strike (5-10 per year).
