Provide testimonials ( Just references at the end of CV is too common, put an extra page at the end of it with testimonials written by your past employers if you have job experience, mentioning your performance)
Hand deliver your resume ( Consider handing your resume directly to the employer, as this creates in-person interactions as well as displaying first impression)
Provide sample design document ( Presenting portfolio of your work. Prepare sample design plan from recent project and present it briefly during the interview. Another case is, prepare sample problem similar to the employer's project, solve it and present it)
Basically, what you have to do is be creative to stand out from the others. Show them what you can do but not overly showing them.
