HE WAS IRRITATINGLY GOOD AT WEARING DOWN HER DEFENSES. she had learned that the last few months of their friendship. it could have been the cadence of his voice or the endearing eagerness in his eyes whenever he had an idea he was particularly proud of -- it also didn't help that he was NOT above using his adorable son as leverage. but whatever the culprit chris had an ability of getting his way with the irish woman a lot of the time. today's trip to the park being no exception. she hadn't wanted to leave the house, hadn't wanted to see anyone, hadn't wanted to do anything except wallow for another day -- another week -- another month.
yet here she was in the florida sunshine on a bench, the first EASY smile in days as she watched troy scamper after his father, a high pitched giggle pealing from the little boy's mouth. " careful now, he'll be faster than you soon, " she teased as chris wandered back over to sit, puffing out breaths as troy continued his manic rounds of the playground.
but before he could answer roux's sharp cry from her stroller alerted becky to the discarded binkie in the dirt. as if on instinct the two parents reached down and just as both hands grasped for it, their heads found purchase first. a soft bump but enough that she winced. her free hand rubbed at the spot as she looked over at his face still close to hers.
" anyone ever tell ya that you're stubborn? a real hard-head, " she joked, her lower lip tucked between her teeth as she tried to hold back her laughter as a soft flush colored her cheeks. it was a beat of her looking back at him before her fingers found purchase around the soft plastic and plucked it up, finally pulling away to brush it off and give it back to her daughter.
