Waris Dirie was born in Somalia in 1965, was subjected to female genital mutilation at age 5, and fled the country at 13 to escape an arranged marriage. Now, she’s a supermodel, author, and activist. “My goal is to eradicate female genital mutilation worldwide during my lifetime. I will never move away from that. Never,” Dirie wrote for Global Citizen. Read @waris.dirie’s story, in her own words, at our main website. (📷: Rankin/The Full Service)
Today is the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
FGM is a practice that violates women's rights to health, security and physical integrity, their right to be free from torture and inhuman treat and their right to life. FGM is any procedure that alters or injures female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is also recognized as a violation of women and girls' human rights.
To stop FGM, the United Nations and the international community use coordinated efforts that engage whole communities while focusing on human rights and gender equality. Communities must be empowered to end FGM and address the devastating consequences for women and girls.
FGM is still practiced in many areas where UN Peackeeping operates, including #Mali, #CotedIvoire, #Liberia. #CentralAfricanRepublic and #Sudan.
#EndFGM is important work of our UNICEF and UNFPA partners, who work jointly to end this destructive practice.

"It's not good to do the excisions, there are girls who die during the process. It's too dangerous for the health of the girls. Fortunately the educated youth refuse this tradition because they have participated in multiple awareness programs. The age for the operation is before the marriage which is usually between the age of 15-20 years old. When we discover that a girl is about to be circumcised we explain to her and speak with her and the fiancé and tell her to leave the house. If the parents insist on the operation then we register a complaint against them with the police. I want my own girls to choose their own husband when they grow up." Kindo Nayalo, 34 years old is the father of two young daughters, Noalimpo and Angelle. He is very involved in the fight against female genital mutilation In his village of Tiboanti, Tillaberi region.
UNICEF works with CONIPRAT, a national NGO present in all regions of Niger to bring awareness on human rights, reproductive health, female genital mutilation, mother and child health and child protection. In the village of Tiobanti, the practice of female genital mutilation has been eradicated.
