The Mexican gray wolf is the smallest subspecies of the gray wolf, and one of the most endangered wolves in the world. Their pack size is generally smaller than their Northern counterparts, reflecting their preference for smaller prey including white-tailed deer, pronghorn, hares, and other small animals. Placed on the endangered species list in 1976 after the arrival of the livestock industry in the 1800s caused the persecution of the species, the last few known individuals were (5 total, 4 males and 1 female) were taken into captivity between 1977 and 1980 in hopes to save the species. Thanks to breeding and reintroduction programs run by various zoological facilities, the species has avoided extinction, but is still under severe threats.

This species of macaw is critically endangered, and considered one of the most endangered species of parrot in the world with an estimated wild population around 350 individuals. The number one threat these birds face is capture for the illegal pet trade. There is a 11,555 acre protected breeding ground for the blue-throated macaw in their native Bolivia’s Barba Azul Nature Reserve, where researchers monitor populations and work on conservation strategies to ensure the species’ survival.
