i don’t think the either of them would plan to come out. it’s something that happens naturally, but it’s big and they end up coming out with a bang. i like to think that it happened at one of the basketball games (bc imo hawkins and the other small towns aren’t football schools and are bigger on basketball). they’d just won the finals to their district’s basketball tournament; their teamwork was impeccable, the three-pointer made it in on the buzzer beater, and adrenaline was pumping through their veins. in the midst of the crowd’s cheers and the teams celebrations, billy runs up to steve, who was on other side of the court, and kisses him hard. steve’s taken aback at first, but quickly kisses back, tongues meeting, lips sucking. everybody else in the gym falls silent for a moment when they see what’s happening, but after a few seconds the silence erupts into cacophony of girls shrieking in dismay of the two hottest boys in hawkins being taken off the market by each other, adults grumbling about teenagers and their indecent public acts, and everyone else confused as to how they’re presumably together when they’re always dicks to each other.
