Bitcoin has been accepted by some of the biggest retail names in 2014, US giants such as Microsoft, Expedia, TigerDirect and Overstock have opened their doors to cryptocurrency users, but results have not been stellar. A recent digital currency empirical analysis, conducted by the Divisions of Research & Statistics Monetary Affairs Federal Reserve Board in Washington, is suggesting, that bitcoin is barely being utilized in retail transactions in comparison to domestic payment systems, which totaled, almost 74 billion dollars in 2012.

“The volume over the past 12 months totals 21 million and remains negligible compared with the use of alternative payment methods; for example general-purpose cards in the United States alone had a volume of 73.8 billion in 2012″ – Federal Reserve
