    he pulled her close, pressing his lips to the top of her head, wrapping an arm around her shoulder to keep her near. for the first time in a long time, they were alone, and they were safe. the business with the volturi and renesmee had finally settled, and their family and friends had left the conflict in safety. for now. jasper wasn’t content or eased enough to assume the peace would last — not when aro wanted alice so badly for his ‘collection’ and guard.  “what do you think of doin’ some traveling, darlin’?”

the boy is young. not a newborn by any means and, to be fair, he’s not remotely a boy anymore. he’s been around for some time. but despite the battle scars that litter his body, carlisle can see the youth in him. though he thinks that may have something to do with the girl that brought him here: ALICE. he catches jasper looking at the large cross on the wall. 

    he opened his eyes slowly and softly. around her, he’d sleep. around her, he’d shut his eyes in quiet and safety, trusting that there’d be nothing and no one to harm him with her at his back. she saved him — she saved him every day. long fingers threaded through one set of her tiny digits resting against his bare chest. their intertwined hands and wrists lay across some of the worst of his vervain scars, along with several raised laces of venom from cracked torsos and shattered limbs, barely healed back together with enough care to stand and fight again. but they were faint as faint could be in the presence of alice — always in the presence of alice. he raised her small hand to his lips, bending his head to press a kiss to her perfect, pale fingers.  “it’s not wise t’ sneak up on a soldier, wife.”  his tone teased, a smile playing at his lips warmly.

I  WANTED  A  PIECE  OF  THE  ACTION  TOO  OF  COURSE .  in  fact  i  was  impatient  for  it ,  poised  on  the  balls  of  my  feet  waiting  for  him  to  finish  with  emmett ,  the  two  liked  to  wrestle ,  but  this  was  all  for  demonstrative  purposes ,  and  they  sadly  had  to  cut  it  short .  jasper  must  have  sensed  it ,  his  fleeting  gaze  cut  across  the  clearing  to  meet  mine ,  and  he  smiled .  when  edward  stepped  forward ,  he  told  him  to . wait ,  addressing  bella  this  time ,  though  his  eyes  never  left  me . 

           i  want  to  show  you  something .  i  know  you  worry  about  her ,            i  want  to  show  you  why  that’ s not  necessary  .  

damn  straight !   i  caught  the  sight  of  edward’s  lips  curving  into  a  grin .  it  had  taken  far  too  long  for  jasper  to  learn  that  lesson  himself ,  how  tirelessly  i  had  to  beg  for  him  to  teach  me  how  to  fight .  he  had  been  so  convinced  i  would  never  dared  it ,  in  the  beginning  he  couldn’t  even  bear  the  thought  of  laying  a  finger  on  me . 

             but  what  if  i  break  you  ?  i might  hurt  you ,  alice  with  these . terrible  hands of  mine . 

now  he  knew  his  fears  to  be  unfounded ,  we  both  knew  my  small  figure  was  but  a deception .  eagerly  i  entered  the  ring ,  he  gave  me  a  small  nod ,  and  i  closed  my  eyes ,  listening  to  the  latent  humming  of  my  visions ,  willing  them  to  come . 

    from  the  left ,  imperceptibly ,  i  side  stepped  at  the  very  last  moment ,    only  to  hear  a  whistling  through  the  air ,  where  he  had  failed  to  grasp      me .  now  from  the  right . 

as  we  continued  in  the  same  fashion ,  always  dodging ,  effortlessly ,  our  dangerous  dance ,  i  grew  bolder ,  more  playful .  the  audience  forgotten ,  it  was  only  him  and  i ,  just  like  it  had  always  been ,  as  i  did  a  cartwheel ,  my  wrists  bending  under  my  weight ,  his  fingers  closing  around  thin  air . 

the  dance  grew  faster  and  faster ,  yet  i  refused  to  give  him  the  upper  hand .  i  allowed  him  a  small  opening  of  course ,  for  a  moment  i  let  him  think  he  had  me ,  and  he  smirked ,  that  cocksure  smile  of  his ,  blonde  strands  falling  forward  to  cover  his  eyes . but  before  he  could  catch  ahold  of  me ,  i  launched  myself  up  onto  the  branch  above ,  light  on  my  feet  as  ever .  i  let  out  a  soft  laugh ,  to  see  him  down  there ,  so  baffled ,  turning  this  way  and  that . 

he  heard  it ,  recognised  the  sound  of  my  joy ,  and  turned  his  head  up  to  see .  i  relished  the  look  of  awe  on  his  face ,  for  that  split  second ,  by  then  i  had  already  landed  neatly  on  his  back ,  and  my  lips  soon  found  his  lips ,  feeling  from  the  shape  of  them  that  he  was  still  smiling ,  dazedly .

                  he’s thankful he can no longer sweat; the heat of the southern sun is especially oppressive today. alec doesnt know why he has taken such an interest in the histories of his new coven. perhaps he is simply unused to being the newest member. he has lived so long, he’s forgotten what it means to be a newcomer. even more odd is the idea that jasper can still see traces of the world in which he lived. alec watched the last dregs of his home and the world he recognized slip away centuries ago. silence is filled with the crunch of dry grass beneath a heeled boot.
