emma wipes the remnants of potato salad  from  finn’s  cheek  with  a  baby  wipe  when  she  hears  the  laugh    –    a flirtatious giggle she was all too familiar with.    eyes  narrow  in  on  the  sound,    brunette  locks  twisting  around  her  cousin’s  finger  as  she  entertains  whatever  story  rowan  is  telling.    so  that’s  why  she  was  asking  if  they  were  a  couple.    emma  lifts  finn  from  his  seat  upon  the  picnic  table,    resting  him  on  her  hip    –    he  was  getting  bigger  by  the  day.    she  walks  like  she’s  on  a  mission,    halting  a  bit  too  close  to  rowan.    ❛  hey,    do  you  want  to  help  me  get  his  things  together?    i  feel  like  we  should  probably  go  before  he  gets  cranky.  ❜

she  thought  she  knew  where  she  was  going.    how  come  navigating  the  bustling streets  of  new  york  came  as  second  nature  but moonlit  dirt  roads  is  where  her  brain  draws  the  line?    with  no  service  on  her  phone,    she’d  given  up    –    eyes  rolling  at  the  first  sight  of  human  life  in  twenty  minutes.    ❛  ideas,    really?  ❜    emma  would  deny  their  proactive  approach  if  she  wasn’t  so  desperate.    ❛  you  know,    you’re  not  nearly  as  irresistible  as  you  seem  to  think  you  are.  ❜

she’d  been  in  this  situation  many  times  before.    forced  to  watch  a  man  die,    expected  to  do  something  about  it.    she  was  going  to  be  sick    –    bile  bubbling  in  her  stomach  as  she  watches  the  blood  pour  from  his  eyes, ears.    her  head  shakes,    calloused  fingers gripped  around  her  wrist,    forcing  her  palm  against  his  back.    ❛  i’m  telling  you -    there’s  nothing  i  can  do  about  this.    he’s  –    he’s  –  ❜    as  good  as  dead.    just  fucking  try!    his friend demands. she  could    –    but  it  would be fruitless,    then  they’d  both  be  as  good  as  dead.    ❛  please.  ❜    she  pleads,    but  the  pressure  of  her  hand  against  the  wounded  has  already  begun  sucking  her  dry, blood pooling in her nose. ❛  it's not going to work.  ❜
