Secret Santa Present

Byron put his pen down and looked around the office the two of you shared while in Stein. Your papers were stacked neatly and pens stored but you were not in sight. He stood, stretching, assuming you'd gone to bed. It had been a whirlwind of a day. In years past he'd never been one to take part in the festivities, but he made you a promise, Christmas in Stein, New Years in Wysteria. A smile pulls at his lips at the memory of how your expression lit up at that simple vow. So you spent the day in town. There was a parade, various carolers, shops to visit, hot cocoa to drink and sweets you insisted he had to try. The chill painted your nose and cheeks the most adorable tint of red. When night fell, the two of you stood among the throngs of residents and watched as the lights in the town square flared to life. You gazed up at the lights, mesmerized. He gazed at you, stunned at your beauty. But festivities ended and duties called so you returned to the castle. He set aside his papers, there would be time enough for them tomorrow. Now he wanted to see you, wrap you in his arms and hold you close. As he exited the office and wandered the halls, he thought back on the year. News of a new princess in a neighboring kingdom, a frightened creature crashing through the forest Ā to fall in front of him, a fateful dance at a ball attended on a whim, bandits, his father... He scowled a bit at that thought. Not all memories were pleasant. He opened the door to your shared room. The curtains to the balcony billowed in the cold breeze that chilled the room. Terror gripped him and he rushed forward fearing the worst, only to stop short. You stood on the balcony, face upturned and blissful smile on your face. You gripped the banister as you tried to catch the delicately falling snowflakes on your tongue. "What would the people of Wysteria think about a princess who catches snowflakes on her tongue like a child?" his tone was soft, loving and you couldn't help but smile. "Tell me, what does the King of Stein think of it?" The smile on your face doesn't dim at all and you hold your arms out to him in silent invitation. Byron steps into your arms and wraps his around you. "I've never seen a vision so beautiful." He whispers. "The town is stunning." You turn towards the lights that look like someone plucked the stars from the sky and decorated the central square with them. Byron hummed in agreement. "You never told me what you wanted for christmas, my love." You smile up at him. "Why Byron, you have it right here. Do I have permission to unwrap it?" His eye opens wide in surprise and he nods. Slowly, you walk your fingers up his arms, standing on tiptoes, until you can thread your fingers into his hair. He doesn't realize what is going on until that patch of cloth that is his daily companion falls away. You stand on the balcony gazing into his gorgeous eyes. "I can't think of a better gift, My King." His smile is gentle, his eyes filled with love as he closes the gap between you. "Merry Christmas, My Love." He whispers as he kisses you. "And many more" you think, sinking into the kiss.
