They meet up with Merrill at the student union, where sheâs perched on the stair railing reading a book. âOh!â she says when she looks up to see them. âSorry! I didnât hear you come up.â
She slides off the railing to land lightly on her feet, beaming at Marian, who canât help smiling back no matter how terrible she feels. âHowâs your day?â she asks.
âOh, itâs lovely,â Merrill chirps, and catches onto her hand. âWhat do you want for lunch? I was thinking maybe pasta.â
âPasta sounds great,â Marian agrees. âAnders?â
He shrugs. âIf thatâs what you both want,â he agrees.
They start walking, Marian trailing a little behind Merrillâs bouncy stride, Anders keeping pace beside them with his hands in his jacket pockets. Itâs a warm, bright day, and the sun in her eyes makes Marianâs head hurt. Sheâs glad itâs not a long walk, at least; moving too much or too quickly makes the pain in her abdomen worse.
âYou had that review today, right?â Merrill asks as they find a table to sit down at. âFor the test? How did it go?â
âWell, one of us is confident,â Anders says, sighing dramatically as he throws himself into the chair.
Merrill frowns, cocking her head. âWhen you say one of us,â she begins thoughtfully, âdo you mean Hawke, orâŚ?â
âHeâs making fun of me,â Marian says, and rips off part of her napkin. âFor having the nerve to take a piss during class.â
âThough,â Anders says, âmaybe youâve got a point about his confidence - ouch!â He flinches and looks up sharply as Marian flicks her balled-up napkin strip at his head.
âAbsolute and unshakable conviction in everything he says doesnât mean your dear roommate is always right,â she points out.
âMaybe not,â Anders sighs, âbut it feels nice, sometimes.â
âYouâre the one whoâs been studying so hard,â she says. âYou know the material, itâs just test anxiety.â
âIâm sure youâll get everything right,â Merrill adds brightly. âYouâre very smart.â
He grins and shakes his head as the waitress arrives with their food. âFettuccine alfredo,â she says and Marian raises her hand. Â âGarden pesto, and pasta primavera.â
âThanks,â Marian says.
âJust plain alfredo today?â Anders asks lightly as he starts on his pasta. âI thought you liked a kick.â
âI donât just eat spicy food,â she protests, frowning. âCanât I just savor something creamy without being judged?â
He shrugs. âSure,â he agrees, âif thatâs what you want.â He looks up at her and raises an eyebrow. âEnjoy yourself.â
She glares at him across the table, and he looks back unfazed. Grumpy, she looks away and stabs at her pasta, trying not to think too hard about how pasta alfredo, even without spice, will sit in her stomach.
Merrill, bless her, seems entirely oblivious to his suspicion, cheerfully eating her pasta. âWell, mine is good,â she says.
âHow have your classes been?â Marian asks sweetly, turning to her.
âOh!â Merrill says, her eyes growing wide. âWeâve been studying the genus divergences of Oleeae and how the major genera developed, Iâm really enjoying it!â
âTell us about it!â Marian suggests, beaming at the sight of Merrillâs face so eager and bright.
A passionate speech about lilacs and a very exasperated discussion about psychology later, theyâve all finished eating, and Anders stands up, grabbing his bag. âIâve got to get to class,â he says, and waves at them. âSee you tomorrow for study group?â
âSame place as always,â Marian agrees, her voice a little strained. Sheâs starting to feel sick again, her lunch feeling very heavy in her stomach, but she grins as she waves back. âHave fun in class.â
He laughs at that and turns to head towards his lecture at a brisk walk, disappearing around the corner.
âAre you ready to go, too?â Merrill asks chipperly.
âSure,â Marian says, and gets to her feet. Standing unsettles her stomach, and she has to close her eyes quickly and wait for her balance to catch up with her. The muscles in her abdomen clench unpleasantly.
âWhat do you want to do before your class?â Merrill asks, sweetly ignorant of her suffering.
âUm,â she manages, and shrugs, too distracted by her stomach to think of anything. âAnything you like.â
âI think Iâd like to get a cup of tea,â Merrill says, and reaches for her hand. âCome join me?â
Marian follows a little helplessly as she leads the way along the road back to the union. God, just walking is making her nauseous, and sheâs beginning to feel a little like she has a knife stuck in her midsection. She grits her teeth and tries to mirror Merrillâs cheerful smile despite the effort itâs taking not to gag.
There are too many people in the union, and the noise makes her want to scream. She clenches her free hand into a fist as Merrill heads for the coffee shop on the opposite side of the building. Her stomach gurgles unhappily and she swallows against the tight feeling in her throat.
âDo you want anything?â Merrill asks as they reach the cafe.
âNo,â Marian says, her voice a little shaky, âthatâs alright, thanks, Merrill.â
âIâll be right back, then!â Merrill says, and goes to get her drink.
Marian stands where she is for a moment, swaying on the spot. Her stomach turns over and she stifles a sick belch with one hand. She can taste vomit in the back of her mouth and fights against her gag reflex so she doesnât throw up on the spot. Clutching at her stomach, she turns and heads towards the bathrooms.
She manages to make it in time, at least, to lift the toilet seat and duck her head before she retches, her muscles convulsing around her stomach and forcing her lunch back up her throat. Curdling cream sauce and strands of pasta splash into the bowl, acid burning her mouth and nose. One heave after another wracks her body, so hard she can hardly catch a breath between waves of chyme spewing up from her throat. She must have thrown up half a dozen times before sheâs able to even lift her head, sobbing and gasping raggedly for air.
The bathroom door opens, and she freezes up, her whole body taut, trying desperately not to cough or gag and make a sound. The last thing she wants is to draw attention to herself with someone else here.
âHawke?â says Merrillâs soft voice.
Oh, fuck, she thinks, and tries to stay quiet before her stomach turns over. She groans weakly and retches again, coughing up a mouthful of watery off-white sick.
âOh, Hawke,â Merrill says, and carefully pushes the stall door open. She kneels down next to Marian, brushing back her hair with light, gentle fingers.
âSorry,â Marian mutters, rubbing her eyes with her knuckles. âDidnât mean to leave you hanging.â
âI thought you looked a little unwell,â Merrill says sympathetically, and rubs her shoulders while she leans over to heave a few more times. âOh, dear - itâs alright, youâre alright, just get it out.â
âYou noticed, huh?â she manages when she stops vomiting. Her stomach still feels queasy, but she doesnât think thereâs actually much left to throw up.
âWell, you were awfully quiet at lunch,â Merrill says, tracing circles on her back with her hand. âAnd youâve been looking terribly pale.â
âYou kept quiet,â Marian says, and gives her a shaky smile.
Merrill shrugs, her eyes wide. âI didnât expect youâd want to talk about it,â she says.
âYouâre better than I deserve.â She leans over the toilet to spit into it, her eyes screwed shut so she doesnât catch a glimpse of the mess before flushing it.
âWill you be alright?â Merrill asks kindly as she sits back on her heels. âIf you need to go home, I could see about getting your assignments for you.â
She laughs and shakes her head, scrubbing at her stinging eyes. âNo, thanks. I think I can make it to my other classes.â
âAlright,â Merrill agrees, and gets to her feet, offering Marian a hand up. âBut why donât you sit down until you have to go.â
