Maybe I'm being salty but this kinda bothers me, why didn't Armin talk to Mikasa about his Eren woes? Instead going to the (essentially) comatose Annie? Especially since he must know that Mikasa is just as concerned as he is. Maybe he didn't want to burden her? But still, I thought (hoped) that they were really close even without Eren playing the middle man. I would be very disappointed if Isayama downplayed their friendship :'(
Armin went to Annie because it was her people he slaughtered. He participated in a devastating and unexpected attack on her hometown, just as she did to his years earlier. He needed to confess to her. Armin is struggling to accept what he’s done. He wants to believe someone on the other side will understand.
And don’t forget, he spoke to Bert in 105.Â
It makes sense that he’s speaking to Annie now.
As far as Armin and Mikasa’s friendship, I feel like they are mostly ok. They were together in 105, side-by-side for the entirety of the chapter. I’m sure they’ve had plenty of conversations. But have you ever had a friend you wanted to salt with but they aren’t 100% into it? Maybe they sort of half-heartedly defend or justify the person or thing you are salting about.Â
In the recent Guidebook interview, Isayama talked about Mikasa being torn between Eren and Armin.
With different ways of thinking, the three characters will go into different directions. The result of that, as part of my conception, is that they will sort of oppose each other.... Even though she can sympathize with Armin, who considers things from a “globalism” perspective, it’s possible that she can’t just let the more self-focused Eren go.Â
It sounds like Eren might be a topic they don’t fully see eye-to-eye on. Armin knows she’s struggling. He doesn’t want to burden her further.
