So I had a doctor's appointment a little while back. It was a GI doctor, and he told me something odd that I'd never heard before.
He said that IBS was caused by neurons misfiring/being really sensitive in the stomach. Ok that makes sense and I had heard that part before
Then he asked if I had anxiety (oh boy really excited to have all my concerns dismissed), I said yes and he was like "aha!! you see...also neurons misfiring"
And I was like... "okay..." He proceeded to tell me that those conditions are functionally the same problem and he focuses on IBS because he's a GI doctor not psych but they're the same tho.
THEN he told me that if I went to neurology they would diagnose the same problem in me as fibromyalgia
also something in there about overactive pain sensors/neurons/whatever causing my chronic pain?? That part frustrates me because it's literally centralized around my joints and so would make more sense to be the unstable joints/hypermobility.
Has anybody else heard this connection?? My kneejerk reaction is to ignore it because he also kept insisting my stomach hurting was from anxiety (it's not but thanks).
Perhaps I just didn't understand something right and he makes perfect sense??
