Freya Mistress of Magick
Freya or Freyja simply means "lady" in old norse, and is arguably a representation of the original Great Goddess (later known as Frigg) in northern pagan tribes throughout Scandinavia, parts of Europe, and the British Isles. In tales of old she belonged to the Vanir, an elven-like race of elementals and earth spirits, who inhabited the land, sea, and animals. Freya is pure unfettered green energy, and embodies pure love with a warlike fierceness. She is the fertility of the green earth and rich soil... she's fiery, passionate, and the wildest of flowers.
As patron of seidr (sometimes called seith), Freya is the archetypical volva and the very first to practice shamanic northern magic. To know Freya is to become one with the currents and energies in nature, to understand the meaning behind the runes, and unleash the magic within.
The essence of all heartfelt songs come from Freya. She is the passion that drives love, relationships, and soul creations. She is the haunting melody we hear when the wind whistles through iced over trees, and when waves crash against the shore. She’s also the fury of a mother defending her cubs, and the force that inspires warriors to defend their homeland from those who would do it harm.
To work with Freya requires you to become one with your natural instincts, and tune into the vibrations within the vast universe. It is often a solitary journey and one that cannot be taught... and is quite different than simply invoking her for matters of the heart. Though receptive to our petitions, wielding her magic is not for beginners as it can blow wide open portals to new perceptions and rebirths. I feel this is often misrepresented by well meaning practitioners. The essence of her spirit is love… but contrary to what some may believe, that love doesn’t lead to weakness and warm fuzzies... it takes tremendous strength to resonate it and carry the light into the cold and indifferent darkness.
Seidr/Freya’s magic is able to reweave the threads of fate and alter reality. It can respin new threads and undo what has already been woven, through lifetimes of what many call karma. It can also allow one to travel shamanically through various dimensions. Without proper grounding and connection this weaving and shapeshifting can have catastrophic consequences. Humans are not equipped to play “Gods”... and usually miss the larger picture, due to emotions and unconscious biases. It’s difficult for our beings to hold such power and knowledge, and understand the true meanings we uncover. This is where connecting with nature (the essence of Freya), and maintaining a healthy conscious existence is so vital before entering into this practice.
If you’re meant to perform seidr, it will come naturally and organically… the pieces of the “how to” puzzle will fall into place, and wisdom will come through instinct and spirit guides. This happens with time, self awareness, and a deep relationship with the planet and all it’s living creatures through Freya’s energy.
There are infinite ways one can connect with Freya, and each relationship is unique and entirely personal. There are however certain plants, animals, colors, and runes associated with her, and studying/working with them can help to deepen your understanding of her energy. If her magic is for you, your journeys with her will likely be never ending, so I don’t believe one should ever limit themselves with specifics... but here is a place to start if you’re just beginning your travels.
