hunter hello! this got so out of hand but I hope you like it! π
Eliottβs nervous.
He shouldnβt be, maybe, with all the other boys egging him on, telling him to finally confess, but he is. Because itβs Lucas.
Theyβre making their way through the trees, the quiet of the forest surrounding them, and itβs just the two of them. Itβs been a while since Lucas has let it be just the two of them.
The night has become exactly what Eliott hoped for. The forest is calm and quiet, only broken by the occasional frog chirping or insect buzzing. Itβs dark, but the moon is wide and bright and the sky is clear, and the stars, the reason heβs dragging Lucas out here at all, are brilliant.
Theyβre moving quickly, Eliott eager to get to the spot he found earlier β a wide clearing surrounded by tall trees, perfect for stargazing. Theyβre walking in silence but the beating of Eliottβs heart fills his ears, a deep thrumming that reminds him of what heβs set out to do. Theyβd left the other boys behind, trying to light a fire, Yann winking at him as heβd pulled Lucas away and Eliott knows itβs now or nothing.
Next to him Lucas trips on a stray root and swears, grasping onto Eliottβs arm to steady himself and Eliott nearly stops breathing. It still amazes him, the kind of effect Lucas has on him.
They finally reach the clearing and Eliott pulls Lucas to a stop, close to him and looks up, up, hoping that Lucas follows his gaze.
βThis is what I wanted to show you,β Eliott says softly. βThe sky you canβt see from the city.β
Eliott hears Lucasβ breath catch as he looks up and sees it β the sky a glittering patchwork of diamonds free from the distractions and pollution of Paris β and Eliott has to look at him. Itβs beautiful: the sky and Lucas looking at it.
Eliott tears his eyes away from Lucasβ profile to look back, remembering what heβs planned, searching his brain for all the constructions and patterns heβs memorized. He knows he has to find Ursa Major first and go from there, otherwise heβll get lost in it all and wonβt be able to find the rest of them.
βThere,β Eliott says, extending his arm and pointing at a shape in the sky, βthatβs the Big Dipper.β
Lucasβ eyes follow Eliottβs hand to search it out and then he steps closer, perhaps under the pretext of needing to look from where Eliott sees it, but Eliott doesnβt mind.
βItβs the four stars there that make the ladle,β Eliott whispers, his mouth close to Lucasβ ear, βand then those three,β he moves his finger tracing it, βare the handle.β
He feels Lucas shudder next to him.Β
But then, almost as if heβs been broken out a trance, Lucas claps his hands excitedly and jumps back, twisting under the constellations as he looks.
βWhich means, there, thatβs Cassiopeia,β Lucas says excitedly, Eliottβs hand dropping as his heart speeds up. He hadnβt anticipated Lucas already being able to map out the sky. Heβd wanted to impress him, wow him, and yet, somehow this is better.
βAnd there! Thatβs the Little Dipper,β Lucas continues, his hand tracing the sky, βwhich means that star β the bright one, there-β His hand stops. βThatβs the North Star.β
Lucas stops suddenly, and turns to face Eliott, his face somber, his eyes wide. βPolaris,β he whispers.
And Eliott canβt take it, he canβt hold back anymore, canβt hide everything written there in his heart.
βLucas,β he says quietly, stepping closer, βwe need to talk.β
Lucas takes a step back. βI donβt think thatβs a good idea,β he says, his brow creasing and Eliott wants to smooth it away.
βI messed up,β Eliott tries, his voice pleading as it cuts through the stillness of the night.
βI know, I get it,β Lucas whispers. βDonβt worry about it. We can just pretend it never happened.β
βLucas, thatβs not what I meant,β Eliott says again, reaching out and grabbing Lucasβ hand in his own. Lucas doesnβt pull away. βI meant I did it wrong when I kissed you last time, and Iβm wondering if youβd let me try again.β
Lucas stills, his head whipping up to face Eliott, his eyes wide, a sudden hope sparking there.
βWhat?β
βLet me try again. Please.β
Lucas stands there for a moment, frozen, but then a smile breaks across his face and heβs nodding as he steps closer.
βOkay,β he says.
So Eliott steps forward and kisses him.
