Elrond’s relationships were not diminishing nor were they fading love or such other misconceptions. They were ardent; vigorous in power even as the tumultuous sea which thrashes against the rocks and sunders entire lands from one another. Elrond’s storyline is consistently twined with the power of the sea very purposefully; because not only does it enhances his own resilience and the remarkability of his kindness in the sheer act of continuing but it conveys the fervent love which encompassed him with each departed relation. Elrond embodies a widower who has been forsaken tenfold over as so many widowers whom appear in literature, yet unlike them he is not portrayed to be a spiteful old woman who is haggard in soul and body; he is “as kind as summer” and he harnesses the power of the sea to do good- because although waves can destroy landscapes and submerge shores they can also carve the sands into something fresh and anew, far better than that which stood before them. This is precisely what Elrond is representative of; too often is the destructive nature of the waves alluded to that it is remarkably easy to merely cast aside the knowledge that they can easily be constructive. He becomes knowledgeable through his experiences of destruction that he warps such wisdom into something lighter and more compelling. It is not that he did not love, for he did very vehemently, but it is rather that he is wiser than most and prevents his shores from being eroded by brandishing the waves as a shield, thus turning them into something purer.
