got brave and decided to start on my first patchwork project. i needed 5"x5" squares but none of the scraps i had were that big so i scaled it down a bit. not sure what size this is going to end up but it might make a nice mug rug or some other smallish decorative mat type situation. also if you're wondering why my switch is there. i do not have a lot of space to work in lol

#i really like this brown + green + white color palette though. it doesn't really come thru in the pic but i think it'll look pleasing #assuming i can manage to sew them together evenly. that remains to be seen #i'm gonna eat and then i'm gonna measure seam allowances on each square and get to stitching #i haven't picked a backing fabric yet but i do have a yard of brown paisley i bought 13ish years ago and never did anything with #or i could use felt i guess. but if i can use up the old cotton yardage first i'd like to do that #i think i still have a piece of batting big enough to be sandwiched in. the pattern i'm (loosely) following uses straight quilt stitching #which should be simple enough for a beginner like me. everything about this project makes theoretical sense to me #i've watched tons of videos and read many books and tutorials on all these processes. i've wrapped my head around it all #it's just the execution that makes me nervous. but we don't get good at something until we actually start doing it #ellen sews

i needed a wallet small enough to fit in my new bag, so i made one (pattern here)! it's far from perfect, especially compared to the example in the pattern listing which was made with a sewing machine instead of by hand. and it still needs an elastic closure, so technically it's not 100% finished yet. but it still turned out sturdy and functional and, if i may say so, rather cute

#with a few alterations this could even be a needlebook. *rubs chin and hums thoughtfully*#also the aesthetic of this wallet absolutely does not match that of the bag but. well.#since when have i ever coordinated or reconciled any of my various aesthetic sensibilities #i saw a felt sewing pattern for a wallet that looked like a book and said ''say no more'' and it was pure luck i had all the materials #the felt is The Good Stuff leftover from my applique candle mat with the tulips so. boom. done in half a day #i'm glad i didn't have to resort to using any of the cheap lousy felt i have on this one. i NEEDED quality fabric for this #as for the embroidered text i tried that trick where you draw on parchment paper (though the more common material is freezer paper)#and then pin it to the felt and stitch and after that you tear away the paper. you don't have to draw onto the felt (which is difficult)#(and even more difficult is trying to eyeball the typography)#anyhoo. enough yapping from me. this was fun #ellen sews

a few more things i've sewed over the past few days (first, another fob for my fabric scissors, a case for my mp3 player, and a case for my earbuds). i'm almost out of felt now, alas. but my blanket stitch is improving with regard to evenness

#i shoulda made the earbud case just like. a half an inch bigger. i don't think it's supposed to be that cramped in there #but hey at least it serves its purpose. i didn't have enough felt to make it bigger than that anyway #ellen sews #<- i think that'll be my tag for posts like this from now on? unless i feel like expanding it to any needlecraft

those sew-in snap closures finally arrived, so my crow is finished! the wings close, and the pin cushion heart is removable!

#unfortunately my embroidery scissors are too big to fit in the pocket meant for that #but that's okay since i was planning on looking for another pair of snips to put in this needle book anyway #so i can have a pair in my work space and a pair in the travel kit. i'll just track down one of those extra teeny pairs of scissors #and i think i'll put a couple wonder clips in the pocket in the middle!#ellen sews

almost done with my crow! sadly have to halt my progress until the snap closures i ordered arrive. once they do, i can sew those in and then sew the two sides together, and add the little pincushion to her back. my digicam battery is charging and had to use my flip phone to take this picture, so sadly the brilliance of the iridescent beads and sequins aren't coming through. i promise she looks as glamorous as a real corvid irl

#i have tons of leftover beads and sequins. wonder how i'll use them.....they're very fun to work with #it wasn't hard to get used to working with a beading needle. it's longer and thinner (i bent it already 😭) but i liked it #once i post the finished piece i'll link the pattern listing once again. i'm two steps away from finishing #and all the steps so far have been a blast #ellen sews

ok so i finally found materials to try sashiko and after a couple of hours at work (on a pre-printed design -- dragonflies on a grid pattern), i have some initial impressions

the nails on the index finger and thumb on my non-dominant hand are getting scraped to hell by the needle lol, wonder if that's normal or if my hand positions are wrong

it might be my hand positions because i have no idea how to hold the needle while stitching yet. so far that's not disastrous, it's just slowing me down a bit as i shift around every few stitches, looking for what feels comfortable and still effective

this is really fun and addictive though -- it's very satisfying to load a bunch of stitches onto the needle and then pull the thread through and see how much progress got made in one fell swoop!

#i feel like the nail damage is kind of inevitable to some degree though because when i watch seasoned sashiko sewists on youtube #i can see the roughness of their nails too. the price of folk art that's as beautiful as it is functional i suppose #ellen sews

finally getting to work on my crow shaped needlebook project. i should've taken a picture of what it looked like when i had the pattern pieces pinned to the black felt in preparation to cut them out -- because the crow's wings are spread out and the head turned to the side, it looked like some kind of playtime dissection table

#i hadn't felt that goth since 2008. except for the fact that i couldn't stop giggling #anyway. refraining from yapping in the tags of this post because i wanna get stitching already #ellen sews
