I am kind of picking at the second draft for this one. Reread it the other day.

             “Edmund.”

             He opened his eyes in the darkness. He started to sit up then realized there was no one in the barracks who would call him by his first name. They all called him Rex.

             “Edmund.”

             Audrey.

             “Damned woman.” He muttered as he sat up. He grimaced as his ribs protested the movement. He could hear his name called again. “Hush.” He called softly toward the wall. He saw the outline of Sol sitting up on his blanket. He couldn’t see his face in the darkness, but he was sure the man eyed him curiously.

             Edmund paused at the window, looking toward the guard room he took several deep breaths. He was near the far door. It wouldn’t be too much of a problem to slip out, except that every breath and movement felt like fire in his side.

             He waited until he was certain the guards were comfortable. It felt like a tense eternity as he had both worry of the guards catching him as well as the other slaves doing something to get him in trouble. Or Audrey doing something more foolish than being out here in the middle of the night. Caliban would love nothing more than to have reason to beat him again. What was she thinking coming here?

             His moment finally came and he lunged for the door, opening it quickly, closing it softly behind and diving for the shadows around the corner.

             “Edmund!” Audrey greeted him with a smile which fell as the moonlight revealed the state of his face. She gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “Edmund.”

             He paused a moment, holding his side gingerly, waiting for the flare of pain to die down. “What are you doing out here?”

             “What did they do to you?”

             He waved her off as she reached for his swollen cheek. “I’m fine. Do you have any idea what they could do to you if they found you here?” He grabbed her arm and started to lead her away from the barrack. “Princess, you have taken leave of your senses.”

             “I’m not a princess. What happened to you?” She reached for Edmund’s other arm. He released her and drew back, fearing she would pull and raise the pain in his ribs again. “Edmund.”

             He sighed, seeing she was near tears. “I’m fine. I just got in trouble is all.”

             “They found the bread.” Audrey said, horrified.
